I was 10 when Terry Fox ran his Marathon of Hope. I enjoy reading this book to my kids, and they can relate to this story even though they live far away from Canada and long after Terry Fox died. The story presents Terry's illness in a non-threatening but honest way. The story rightly focuses on his life, and his accomplishments and not on his death. The message about facing a challenge is relayed throughout the book from incidents from Terry's childhood right through to his last hospital stay. Incidentally, the book is good for teaching Canadian geography.

I think the whole Value Tales series is terrific and this is one of the best. I read these books to my children when they were young (quite young, grades 1 and 2) and I'd read 1/2 the book the first night and 1/2 the book the second night. As they got a bit older they would read them on their own--and used them as a research base even through middle school. These books 1) tell the biography of a notable person, in an easy to comprehend, engaging style 2) weave into the true tale an important value or attribute that parents try hard to instill in their children. As an adult I was captivated and so were my children. When I was asked to bring a book to a baby shower this year (2013) I emailed my children (now in their 30's) and asked which books they especially remembered and liked--Terry Fox was on the top of the list. You cannot go wrong with this series.

I wasn't familiar with Terry Fox, but it turns out he's quite famous in Canada - one of their top historic role models. He battled cancer and, after having a leg removed, decided to run across Canada and raise money for cancer research. This is the story of his life - always gaining strength from big challenges. I know this because my 7-year-old daughter read the book and excitedly told me about it. I haven't actually read it myself. But she we incredibly inspired. Shortly after reading it, her school held a Relay for Life event to benefit cancer research, and she INSISTED on running. I'm thrilled with the impact.
