5.0 out of 5 stars If I Had to Buy Only One Book on How to Improve Healthcare, This Would Be the Book, May 28, 2009
This review is from: Value Stream Management for Lean Healthcare (Perfect Paperback)
I pleasantly found Value Stream Management for Lean Healthcare to be the most comprehensive and practical, how-to guide, for implementing continuous improvement in healthcare. The authors definitely speak to their vast knowledge and experience from applying Lean in healthcare. This book has the most complete, detailed, ED improvement case study found, but also has a great financial analysis explanation of how to realize financial gains through these type projects, a waste audit, mini-case studies throughout, as well as the very useful Appendix (which could almost be a book on its own). We will be using this book as main reference in all our Lean-Sigma projects and will be purchasing these for all our managers. Great job authors!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lean Healthcare At Its Best, May 8, 2009
This review is from: Value Stream Management for Lean Healthcare (Perfect Paperback)
I recently purchased this book and was amazed at the level of detail that was included. The examples are to-the-point and provide superb insights into how Lean is implemented by using simple approaches to solving problems with an engaged staff in the healthcare environment. The ED case study, the broad range of nearly every possible Lean and quality improvement tool being described in detail, the numerous case studies, the additional OR and Physician's Group case study, etc. all make this book in a class of its own. We will be purchasing these for all our managers and supervisors. This book is for operations and I agree with the authors, serious effort is required.

5.0 out of 5 stars Former VP Operations Medical Practice, January 2, 2012
This review is from: Value Stream Management for Lean Healthcare (Perfect Paperback)
This book is a comprehensive step by step implementation of lean processes in a healthcare organization. The examples utilized by the author contain a deep understanding of the internal operations of health care facilities and can be adapted to the reader's own medical practices. in 1926 Henry Ford said that "The old way was to guess. We cannot afford to guess. We cannot afford to leave any process to human judgment." (Ford) This statement could not be more true than today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Lean Healthcare Implementation Guide, March 15, 2010

This review is from: Value Stream Management for Lean Healthcare (Perfect Paperback)
The Value Stream Management for Lean Healthcare book is the most complete breakdown on how to conduct a Lean or Kaizen Event in a hospital setting. Each Lean tool is thoroughly explained as well as demonstrated in a comprehensive ED case study. The forms and worksheets provide excellent examples for any improvement team in a hospital or healthcare setting working on a Lean project. The book conveyed how 'not-difficult' Lean can be. The inclusion of the numerous case studies throughout makes this a very practical book for any healthcare professional.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lean Healthcare for Kaizen Events, December 23, 2009
This review is from: Value Stream Management for Lean Healthcare (Perfect Paperback)
We found Value Stream Management for Lean Healthcare to be the most comprehensive book in the market for understanding how to run a kaizen event. The authors did a superb job in connecting Lean and the PDCA cycle of improvement to healthcare's (Assess, Diagnosis, Treat, and Prevent) methodology. The book demonstrates how a kaizen event should be conducted having all forms available with checklists, key points, illustrations, photos, etc. through a realistic case study of an Emergency Department. This book will be a key reading for operational staff (supervisors and managers). Finally, a book that has basic theory, but more importantly, practical application examples to work from. Also, the additional case studies throughout makes this book in a class of its own. You can tell this book was written by those in healthcare with operational experience. Great job authors!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lean Book on Healthcare for the Operational Staff, August 16, 2009

This review is from: Value Stream Management for Lean Healthcare (Perfect Paperback)
I found this book to be very practical in "how-to" implement Lean in healthcare processes. All our departmental managers and floor supervisors have this book and now use this as our guide for all improvement efforts. Our program of Operational Excellence is continuing evolving and this book was our latest enhancement to the program. Also, the ED case study explained throughout this book is by far the best, detailed, step-by-step explanation of how, what, why, etc. a Lean project (or any continuous improvement) project is conducted. I have read nearly all the books on Lean and this book is an exceptional analysis on exactly what needs to be done in a Kaizen project. Fantastic reference and guide for anyone in healthcare!

With health care costs rising at an exponential rate, the entire health system needs to find ways to increase efficiencies and reduce / eliminate waste thus control the costs and provide better service.

This book provides the methodology and step by step instructions to conduct the value stream mapping exercise.

Great examples of process flow charts and waste walk. The basis concepts of Pull, Standard Work and 5S are also explained very clearly.
