Motor oil is made from crude oil and is used to lubricate, clean, and cool engines. Types of motor oil include conventional, synthetic, diesel, bio-based, hybrid (blends of conventional and synthetic), and recycled oils. Motor oil varies in weight and viscosity, as well as additives that some manufacturers add to the oil during the refining process. A numerical code system created by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) grades motor oils according to viscosity--the higher the number between 0 and 60, the more viscous (thicker) the oil is. Most consumer motor oils are graded by two numbers, with the first number indicating cold weather (Winter or "W") performance.

SAE 20W-50

This oil has a weight of SAE 20W-50, meaning it has an SAE viscosity rating of 20 in cold temperatures and a rating of 50 at normal operating temperature. Always check your vehicle's owner's manual to verify that this is the correct weight of motor oil for your vehicle.

Conventional Motor Oil

This oil is a conventional motor oil, meaning it is refined from crude oil or petroleum products. Conventional motor oils may or may not have additives included after refining. Conventional motor oils are more versatile than synthetic or hybrid motor oils, because they are suitable for use with nearly all types of modern vehicle engines, from cars and trucks to motorcycles, ATVs, farm equipment, and more.

Racing Oil

Racing oils are designed for track cars and other types of high-compression vehicles intended for motorsports competition. They contain particular additives for increased engine horsepower and reduced friction on metal parts, and provide special protection for engines with high compression or higher horsepower. Racing oils usually include fewer detergents than regular conventional motor oils.

Please note that many, if not all, oils labelled as racing oils are not street legal, and it is not recommended to put racing oil in a conventional passenger vehicle. Make sure to double-check the product label as well as the specifications of your vehicle to ensure proper usage.

No need to purchase ZDDP additive with Valvoline Oil. I researched Valvoline Oils and all VR1 Racing oils with all grades contain the highest levels of "ZDDP" Zinc/Phopohorus levels for Vintage Engines. Amazon has the Best Price online at this time for this Grade of Oil. Best Product, Best Price!

We have C1 and C2 Corvettes (1953 - 1967 ). Todays oil works on engines with roller cams, old technology need a zinc additive to lubricate the hydraulic and sold lifter cams of yesterday. Valvoline does a great job doing this. I do suggest a zinc additive for extra protection such as ZZDP plus.

Why: In an internal combustion engine the camshaft followers are one of the highest friction areas, which means you need to be concerned with proper lubrication to prevent excessive or premature wear. Most modern engines have benefited from racing engine technology and feature lower friction roller cam followers, but for older vehicles, muscle cars, and sports cars it is essential to have additives like Zinc that can handle high contact pressure, high friction components like flat tappet cams.

The problem: Once the major automakers began incorporating roller followers the need for these additives decreased and major oil companies began reducing them in their oil blends. Thus modern oils are inadequate for older design engines. Also, conventional oils are preferred over synthetic by many racing engine builders, and it has become difficult (or very expensive) to find refiners producing conventional oil in racing formulations.

The solution: Fortunately we have Valvoline; the only major brand that contains adequate amounts of Zinc additive for your vintage or high-performance engine. My experience using Valvoline 20W-50 Racing Oil in drag racing engines is that I've never had an oil related failure, and that piston rings, bearings, and cams show only expected wear. Amazon turned out to have the best price for this product and since I use 8 quarts per change, price is important. I do however miss the good old days of 12 quart cases…

Works well. From what I read this is good oil for antique cars, has all the right ingredients to prevent wear on non roller bearing lifters.

Using this as break in oil for vintage motors on advice of the engine builder. Have used it on three engines by now. It increases the time reqired for break in, but due to great lube qualities helps reduce the high break in temperatures of less expensive oils. It will pay off in the long run by providing tighter tolarances, less oil consumption and longer engine life. If I can increase the life of a expensive fresh engine the extra cost of this oil is well worth it. The results so far have been very positive, am using it in sevaral older performance engines also with good results.

As an owner of a classic car I am very interested in having an oil available that provides the additives that once used to be found in all oils but is now missing in most. These additives (especially zinc)protect the older engines from excess wear and premature failure. This oil meets the requirements of the old engines - I'm so glad it is available and so glad Amazon delivered it so quickly for a very fair price!

This is the only oil we have used in the Pro Stock Flat Bottom Race Boat 10 + years Our big block 496 Chevy sees 8000-8600 Rpm for 5 Miles a race. The valve spring pressure is over 200 LBS in the closed position that`s ware pressure on the cam. Never an oil issue! That`s what helps Champions to be made.

This is good oil at a good price. I used it on my MGB and it is great. I like that it already has Zinc in it. Before I was using regular oil and adding ZDDP at $10 a bottle.
