5.0 out of 5 stars Vamos Dar a Volta no Guetho, April 18, 2000

Timbalada is energy. Although there is no substitute for seeing them perform live, this is an excellent alternative. If you want to learn about Bahia and especially Timbalada, this is a good starting point. 'Perdido de Amor' is phenomenal along with 'Beija-Flor' and 'Meia-Hora.' If you're running out of energy on the stairmaster 'Canto Pro Mar/Ae,Ae' and 'A Latinha' will revitalize you (a timbalada revitaliza). If you've gotten this far and are reading this review, you will not regret buying this CD. Para pular sem parar.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my top-ten favorite CDs, October 19, 1999
This album turned me on to Timbalada and axe' music in general. It sometimes takes me a while to warm-up to music I've never heard before, but this one grabbed me immediately.

Brazilian samba-based dance music should be live (ao vivo). There's so much more excitement from the performers and the interaction with the audience. Also, the audio engineers make the percussion on studio CDs, especially the low stuff, like surdos, too weak. On this recording, you feel the bass drums.

Like other live axe' music I've since collected, audience participation is part of the energy. A good example on "Volta no Guetho" is the song, "A Luz de Tieta" where the audience provides the backup singing, strong and on-key.

The following song, "Perdido de Amor" was the one that made me a die-hard fan of this music. I must have repeated it five times when I first heard it.

As a bonus, some of Bahia's finest vocalists guest on this CD, Ivete Sangalo, Caetano Veloso, and a wonderful vocal on the single studio track by Marisa Monte. Timbalada's own Ninha Brito is one of the most exciting and amusing puxadors I've ever heard.

I bought this CD because I play timbau (the hand drum Timbalada is named for), and wanted to hear good timbau playing. The members of Timbalada are amazing. I recommend this CD to anyone who likes exciting music.

By the way, I like this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Alegria, April 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Vamos Dar a Volta No Guetho: Ao Vivo (Audio CD)
This CD brings nothing but pure unadulterated joy when I blast it at home, I have a one-person party every time I play it. It brings me back to guetho square as ninho yells "A timbalada 'ta de banda" and a galera yells back "'ta de bandinha!". It brings me back to Salvador and everything I love about Brazil. It nuts, its crazy, it an absolute blast! If you love crazy timbau rythms of Timbalada, Olodum, even Ile Aye, get this CD. Having a bit of mosh pit within you, doesn't hurt either.
