Excellent Paranormal Retelling,

This review is from: Vampire Darcy's Desire: A Pride and Prejudice Adaptation (Paperback)
I was not sure I would want to read this book after reading the disaster known as Mr. Darcy, Vamprye, but I always thought there were several Austen characters who would make good "antagonists" in a paranormal book - Wickham, Willoughby, John Thorpe, Capt. Tilney, etc. What I liked about this one is the way the author keeps the story tied together with the Scottish ballad, making it the basis of the curse under which Darcy must function.
Spoiler Alert!!! Darcy is a dhampir, and each member of the Darcy family faces the situation where he must choose to become a vampire by surrendering to the "need" for blood, or he must be the first to break the curse on the family. The vampirism is passed to the first born son of each generation. No other Darcy has been able to defeat Wickham and the curse, but Fitzwilliam Darcy is determined. Except - he meets Elizabeth Bennet and is drawn to her - desires her as a man would a woman and as a vampire would a victim. Darcy "fights" Wickham as he does in the original Austen book. Darcy still must save Elizabeth's family from Wickham influence. Wickham takes Lydia to Newcastle as he does in the original. Darcy cannot allow himself to love Elizabeth as he does in the original. The fact that Jeffers tries to keep several of the original Austen elements in place helps this story line. With Mr. Darcy, Vampyre, I felt the author threw in every gimmick she could think of to use. This story line is much tighter in its presentation. The characters' motivations are the same, but there is an element of "sexual tension," necessary for a paranormal or vampire story. A vampire story could not be a chaste as the original Austen works so the reader must be aware of that. However, it is not out and out blatant sex. There is the need for completion as one might expect in a vampire story. Jeffers does bring Darcy and Elizabeth together faster than in the original, but I liked the way she treats Elizabeth. Austen saw Elizabeth Bennet as an intelligent woman, one of the things which attracts Darcy in the first place. Jeffers says she makes Elizabeth the "Van Hesling" character, using her intelligence to help Darcy defeat Wickham and to beat his family curse. She has no powers except her intuitiveness and her brain. That makes her a strong opponent for Wickham. In fact, Darcy becomes a stronger opponent against Wickham when he aligns himself with Elizabeth.

I love this book, it had me captured from the beginning to the end. I love the way Darcy calls Elizabeth,Vixen. I read a few bad reviews, but I guess it depends on taste because this book was great. I wish we could go further with a sequel, especially something that was stated in epilogue I am a bit confused about, but if I say what it is than it will be a spoiler. So, I will just make due of what I think the particularly character meant when talking about a name.

I greatly enjoyed Regina Jeffer's book, Mr. Darcy's Desire. It was a well-researched, interesting story with a compelling plot and vivid characters. For those of us who are Darcy addicts, this book is a great fix. The brooding, dark vampire Darcy fits very well with canon, and as usual, he is more concerned with duty and protecting those he loves than he is with his own desires. Wickham's character as an archetypical villain is also satisfyingly close to Austen's selfish, vengeful anti-hero. I highly recommend this book for romantic chills this Halloween.

Not your average Austen adaptation,

As an avid Austen fan and a person who have loved vampire stories for around 15 years, I was hoping that someone finally had gotten this little twist of a story right. I could really see Darcy as a vampire, brooding, sulky, irresistable and cursed, but... alas, it was not really what I wanted. While I appreciated the romance aspect of the story--and that is what it is, a romance--it was not very Austen-like. If that doesn't bother you, you will probably like this story because it is fun, flirty, and I must say neatly tied together by its mythology. I was hoping for a more true-to-the-novel story, and was distracted at times by the lines that she took directly from movies and/or the novel. I also had a very hard time imaginging Elizabeth attacking vampires. I know she was an avid walker, but ???
Overall, I would say it is a fun read, but it definitely does not have same "feel" as the world Jane Austen created.

Disappointing,
This review is from: Vampire Darcy's Desire: A Pride and Prejudice Adaptation (Paperback)
My son bought Vampire Darcy's Desire for me for Christmas and I applaud his attempt at getting the 'perfect' gift, but I was quite disappointed with the book. The story was given to us on a silver platter by page 40, but the book went on for another 240 pages. The editing was horrible, these books are simply cranked out with little respect for the reader.
If you're into internet fanfic or vapid romance you'll like it, otherwise, look elsewhere.

If you were among those disappointed in Mr.Darcy, Vampyre you will not be so with this book. I greatly enjoyed it, finding myself unwilling to put it down. I highly recommend this P+P vampire adaptation.

When I saw the title of this book I rolled my eyes, I thought this would be another ridiculous vampire book to add to the "vampire mania" that has been so popular recently. I purchased this book simply because I had read Ms. Jeffers other books and simply loved them. This book was absolutely enjoyable, I love the passion, romance and connection that Darcy and Elizabeth shared from the beginning of the book. I simply could not put this book down, from start to finish it had my attention. Well done Ms. Jeffers, I look forward to your future books with great anticipation.

If you love Stephanie Meyer's Twilight Series then by all means pick up this book and enjoy. It has all the romance of Pride and Prejudice mixed with the vampire genre. You can't get better than this one. I have read many "mixed" paranormal-classic mashes. This is the best. It was the first book of Ms. Jeffers that I have read and now I am an avid fan. Her masterful mix of Austin characters, Scottish lore, and a great story is just wonderful. This is my new favorite comfort book (I'm not allowed comfort foods they're fattening). It's the one I travel with and the one you can always find at my bedside. Edward and Vampire Darcy will forever be my favorite lore characters.

Darcy thirsts for blood...,
By iErlynn (VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vampire Darcy's Desire: A Pride and Prejudice Adaptation (Paperback)
I thought "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" could not be outdone for the monster P&P craziness. I was wrong! "Mr. Darcy's Desire" was fantastic! My Darcy is a Vampire who is tempted by the blood of Elizabeth Darcy! After a series of courtship Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth end up getting married! Then the reader gets to journey through the rest of the book as Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth, and Colonel Fitzwilliam bring down Vampire Wickaham who has kidnapped Lydia and made a small army of vampire/undead minions. Ugh... can we say awesome!
With some juicy romance scenes between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy this smutty vampire romance is a perfect pleasure read. I can't understand how many typos made it past the editor, quite disturbing actually, but other than that this one is great. Another monster P&P adaptation is a success. Favorite piece of the book is that Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth get married half way through the book and the romance continues to grow on rather then ending with the marriage. Also enjoyed the in depth story line of Elizabeth and Georgiana becoming closer friends. Might actually read this one again some day.

This is the book that makes me very disappointed that Amazon doesn't allow refunds on eBooks. I'm not sure if the fault lies with the author or the editor/publisher, but the changes in verb tense WITHIN THE SAME SENTENCE, SIDE BY SIDE, were so distracting, I couldn't read more than a few chapters.Example: Chapter 7 "Unfolding the paper, she gasped upon seeing the cloak. It was a deep forest green; she had never saw seen anything so fine." |
