The Third and most recent edition of The Vampire Film featuring a new chapter, "The Vampire at the Millennium," was released in October 1996 to coincide with the centennial of Stoker's novel Dracula. More vampire films have been produced since the First Edition of The Vampire Film appeared in 1974 than in the entire history of motion pictures prior to that year. The first completely revised and updated edition was published in 1993. The Third Edition, at over 340 pages in length and with well over 200 illustrations, insures that what began as the first book-length study of the subject in 1974 remains the most comprehensive available. The authors, Alain Silver and James Ursini, are continuing their research for future revisions and invite comments from their readers.

"The Vampire Film" is an astounding reference book for those interested in vampire films. The descriptions of the films are great, including an excellent section on the vampires of Hammer films. The filmography at the book's end is great!

This is by far the best vampire film book I have ever read! Combining film analysis with Vampire lore makes for a fun read. Chapters include: "Hammer and the Victorian Pyschology," "Elisabeth Bathory: Still Thirsty After All These Years," and "I Was a Teenage Vampire." Worth Having!

This would perhaps be a good book for non-fans of the genre or someone more interested in general film studies rather than genre studies. The book offers very little that is new and does so in a pretty uninspiring way. (Though perhaps that's because this is such an early text in the field and everyone has learned what not to do from him.) Ursini didn't appear to be much of a fan of the genre and there was this insidious sense that he had not watched many of the films he discussed. I'm surprised this has made it to a third edition, perhaps it's the result of so few good books about this genre. Skip it and go read something better.
