4.0 out of 5 stars Family strife, August 26, 2007
This review is from: Vampire Game, Vol. 11 (Paperback)
Things start to get darker in Pheliosta, as the final arc of Judal's "Vampire Game" really gets moving -- kidnappings, imposters, vampires and some very nasty poisons. The eleventh volume has a bit of middle-book syndrome, but it moves quickly and reveals some shocking new secrets.

Darres is in a bind. Yujinn has told the world that he's the illegitimate son of the late Queen Sonia, but he can't pull Sidia from its sheath -- which is the only way of proving his false claim. As Darres, Yujinn and Ishtar explore his sad past, a delegation from Mil Seii arrives, representing Lord Lassen -- he's a poison expert, master of the undead, and he wants the throne of Pheliosta. Everyone is scared of him.

To make matters worse, Falan is abducted from Ci Xeneth while researching a way for Darres to draw Sidia, and Yujinn takes Darres and Sidia on a mystery trip to Mil Seii -- unaware that Ishtar and Duzell are also going there. But a seemingly straightforward rescue mission takes a twist, as Duzell finds himself facing a familiar person...

Though the eleventh volume of "Vampire Game" seems slow at first, there's a lot going on here. Kidnappings, poisonings, treachery, a mystery from the series' start is cleared up, and we get to see some creepy zombie knights that make the vampires seem positively cuddly.

Moreover, the tone of the series has grown darker -- except for a few funny asides, there's no humor here. Instead, we get an exploration of Darres' unhappy past as an orphaned thief, and the utter nastiness from Mil Seii's cruel knights, vampires and zombie army. The zombies are a particularly nice touch, introducing an even darker magical touch than even the vampires.

And I'll say this for Judal -- she knows how to craft a cliffhanger. There's a particularly shocking twist as the book ends, and it promises to make Duzell's life pretty interesting.

Which is good, because everybody's favorite "depressed gypsy" vampire fades into the background somewhat, with all the drama about Falan and Darres. Ishtar shows how she's grown, however -- she only registers anger for a moment before saying "Over it!", and her thoughts are preoccupied with saving her favorite cousin rather than fun or adventure.

The eleventh volume of "Vampire Game" kicks off the manga's final arc, and introduces some intriguing new characters to the mix. Where will it go next?
