In the title story, "Dark Nocturne," D is hired to unlock the secret of a siren's song that is drawing men in their twenties to their deaths in the hills outside Anise Village. In "Notes on Imagined Autumn" D finds himself caught between two lovers during a ritualistic sacrifice in the village of Shirley's Door, but if D can't stop the sacrifice will all in the village be doomed? And in "Legend of the War Demons" two living weapons, genetically engineered creatures who are the last remnants of a war waged hundreds of years in the past, find that battle is not so easily forgotten. It's up to D to stop their unending conflict before it consumes the present as it did the past.

Interesting short stories but they were very inconsistent with D's character,

This is the 10th novel in the Vampire Hunter D series. This novel is different from previous novels in that it is actually a collection of three novellas. I didn't realize this when I purchased the book. It was interesting to read short stories about D; I think this material lends itself to a short story type format.The above being said this was probably the worst installment in the Vampire Hunter D series yet. The first story (after which the book is named) is just off. D had a flippant attitude that is very unlike his normal stoic demeanor. In fact the character of D didn't seem to be like D at all; for a second I thought Zorro had stepped in to take D's place. All of the characters in this story were a bit off; the whole story was out of context and out of place. The remaining two stories were more in keeping with D's character; although D seemed to be a little more chatty than normal in the second story too. I was a bit disappointed overall because part of the reason I enjoy these books is the slow and reluctant unfolding of D's character. These stories undermined that by changing D's character willy-nilly and confusing me about who I was reading about. The book was okay. The first story awful, the second two somewhat interesting. I am excited for the next book because that is supposed to go back to the original Hunter D format. karissabooks.blogspot.com

Three short stories which are OK but in which D does seem to step out of character every once and a while. Stepping out of character, for any character, can mess up a story easily.Still good, but not great. Try to get it used or out of the library.

I like the Vampire Hunter D series of books. Not too keen on this one though. It's a collection of three short stories. While the scenarios are in keeping with the world D lives in (full of supernatural monsters in the year 12090AD), D seems to be written out of character, as he talks too much. In all his other proper books, he is a person of few words and rarely startled.In hindsight, I would skipped this book and waited for the next one, which I think will be a doozy.
