From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up?When Scooter is asked to join the Graveyard Armadillos, he is thrilled, even when he learns that to be accepted he is expected to "prove" that moviemaker Marcus Chandler is a vampire. Along comes a strange man who sets into motion a series of events that change the residents of Scooter's small town. The cast of characters is large. Most of the teens are stereotypes, from the high-school heartthrob to the "always-in-trouble" brothers. Marcus Chandler is the most interesting adult character but is, unfortunately, relegated to the mechanism that moves the plot. The message seems to be that those who are different will cause rational people to behave irrationally. The potential for a real thriller exists here, but too many characters and too many "filler" chapters that set the scene for small incidents make for a cumbersome read. Hill pokes along through 20 chapters and then offers a hectic and uninspired ending. There are so many extraneous words that the impact of the situations is lost. Mood and tone are also missing. With such good ingredients as an albino moviemaker, a group of teens, a smart dog, first love, and a crazy vampire, it's a shame to have such a lackluster product.?Molly S. From Booklist

Gr. 7^-12. Marcus Chandler is a reclusive film producer who seems to have a rare disease that has left him with bleached skin and a heightened sensitivity to light. The Graveyard Armadillos are convinced he is a vampire. Since vampires can't be photographed, they decide to get a picture of Chandler to make their case. Fifteen-year-old Scooter Keyshawn, who wants to prove himself to the Armadillos, agrees to snap the photo. Whether Chandler's vampirism is real or imagined, there are still plenty of dark forces in Scooter's small Texas hometown: teens are disappearing and eventually turning up dead. It's up to Scooter and his friends to clear the innocent and trap the real vampires. The atmospheric writing and the harrowing quest will keep the pages turning, and the simple prose and the emphasis on action rather than character development will make the book a good choice for reluctant readers. More About the Author

William 'Bill' Hill is a naturalized northern Nevadan, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana and a product of many places and stories. Although not a military brat like Danny Chase of The Magic Bicycle, Bill has lived in numerous locales, including Prairie Village, KS; Bristol, TN; and around Dallas and Denton, TX; and in south and north Lake Tahoe, NV.
Bill first learned to read through superhero comic books, then spy-thrillers, Sci-Fi and finally fantasy novels, tucked in among the required classic readings. He has earned 'serious' degrees from Vanderbilt University in Economics and Business Management and a MBA from the University of North Texas, as well as certifications in Outdoor Emergency Care.
Since realizing that writing was his best talent and a gift, Bill escaped the restrictive drudgery of the corporate world to craft his tales. Along with working in Human Resources, Bill has been employed as an 'alchemist' in South Lake Tahoe, a ski patroller at Diamond Peak in Incline Village, NV, and a sports official in Douglas County.
Bill, his lovely wife, Kat, and their wonderful son, Brin, live in the shadow of the eastern Sierra and on the high desert of the south Carson Valley. Bill intends to write imaginative fiction and fantasy until dirt is shoveled upon his coffin.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Vampire Hunters, March 15, 2002
By
Kathy Quimpo (Cerritos, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Vampire Hunters (Hardcover)
Scooter Keyshawn looks forward to becoming one of the Graveyard Armadillos, which include Russell Knight and his sister, Racquel, Kristie Chandel, Jo Gunn, twins BJ and CJ Mochrie, and Garrett. His initiation was both heart pounding and preposterous at the same time. All he had to do was take a picture, a picture of Marcus Chandler, a retired filmmaker with a rare skin disease that left him with white - really white - and sensitive to sunlight, whom Garrett believed was a vampire. He took the picture, unfortunately, but of course there were consequences for doing such a foolish deed. Scooter apologized, forced to by Judge Grandfather Keyshawn, and he actually came to be fond of the man. As soon as people started to disappear, things became uneasy for Scooter. And, when they found Tony and Teri, the Newbaker twins, dead, everything just fell apart. He knew all accusations pointed to Chandler, but he wasn't a vampire and he didn't kill them, or so he thought.
The Graveyard Armadillos was just a local gang that no one wanted to be apart of, no one except Scooter Keyshawn. Scooter was an outcast in school, and no one really knew him well except his best friends, Flash and Russell. Flash, his Labrador, is the perfect dog for him; he's smart, loyal, and obeying. Russell, his human friend, is pretty much just like him; they like each other for who they are, and not who they want to be. Scooter, however, wants to be the one in Kristie Chandel's, the minister's daughter's, eyes. He's got a major crush on her and he hasn't made his move yet. Once they started "hanging out," they came to grow fond each other, and he even received his first kiss from her.
Although I'm not into the whole "love scene" that much, my favorite part in this fantastic book is when Scooter and Kristie kiss. Scooter had killed - staked through the heart - the vampire, Mr. Shade. He was responsible for the deaths and disappearances of the teenagers of the town. Scooter found Kristie afterwards and kissed her. The kiss was short, yet sweet, and in my opinion, nothing else could have reached the height their kiss did. It was the perfect moment for it; they both liked each other and were in great danger just minutes before. The best part: she beamed brightly and said, "I think everything is going to be all right now." Obviously the kiss wasn't just a kiss, it was a spark of true love.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book was totally cool., November 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Vampire Hunters (Paperback)
This book had alot of drama and action. It introduces many new ways to kill a Vampire. There is no telling who the vampire is. Many seens had me think it was time to lose a charactor. It shows real life matters with totally off the wall stunts. It was easily one of my favorite books.
