3.0 out of 5 stars A Great First Time Horror Read., July 23, 2006
By Eugene Fenlon BA (A far away place.) - See all my reviews
I first read this book in 1997 when I was 13 years old. Before this book I had just only read Rohal Dahl and Greek Mythology books and nothing more. Don Conroy's 'Vampire Journal' was a breath of fresh air. Sick of the numerous Dahl books, Vampire Journal was something new and different to me. At my time of reading it was a bit simple and drenched in gothic mystery and eerieness. This book is based on a journal written by a priest in the 19th century who claims that a vampire was captured and locked in a coffin in a vault under Tintern Abbey. When a group of teenagers stumble across the journal, they set out to uncover the truth about the vampire and get caught up in a terrifying adventure spanning centuries, which could cost them their lives!.

This was a great book for my age at the time. It had mystery, adventure, great characters, old locations of Ireland and it was fast paced. Now of coarse, it is a bit dated and too short for the fast growth of young readers of today. But, this still is the first book that got me into reading horror books as a child. This still is a good book in my eyes and younger children of the present day will enjoy it. It may even lure them into reading more childrens horror books.

If I had reviewed this book when I was at the age I read it, then I would give it 4 stars. But now, there are far more better books out there for children to read. Recommended, but only if your interested.
