5.0 out of 5 stars BLOODLESS VAMPIRES August 2, 2010
I love British humor. This movie is more comedy than horror. Jimmy's girlfriend has broken up with him seven times in order to see other guys. Jimmy always takes her back. Fletch has recently lost his job as a clown for punching a seven year old. Together they go on an adventure. They encounter a group of women who look like porn stars (with their own slow motion swagger music) along the way. Eventually they become lesbian vampire killers. The movie also has a vicar who drops the f-bomb. Condoms are loaded up with holy water to make water bombs against lesbian vampires. The only way to kill the vampire queen is for Jimmy to use a special sword with a handle in the shape of the male organ. I loved the humor. When a man's wife catches him cheating, he says to her, "In my defense, I wasn't going to tell you." Fletch complains about the lesbian vampires, "Even dead, women would rather have each other than me." Jimmy and Fletch are a modern day Frodo and Samwise going against the forces of evil. The movie contains bad language, but not overly vulgar. There is some brief nudity early in the film (topless women from the 18th century with implants). The vampire blood was white goo. The sexual situations of girl on girl is more simulation and fakey than erotic. It really doesn't rate 5 stars, but 4 stars isn't enough. I am ready for the sequel. Now if they can only get Angelina to play the queen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great British humor disguised as horror July 15, 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Vampire Hunters was originally released and panned as really bad schlocky horror by critics who missed the entire point of the film. It's not a horror film. It's a comedy disguised as a horror film.

Part of the problem, which was off putting to critics before the film even started, was confusion caused by the name. Originally released as "Lesbian Vampire Killers" many people were not sure if the film was about lesbians who killed vampires or people who killed lesbian vampires. The rename on the DVD release clears up the confusion.

The idea is that an isolated rural village has existed for centuries under a curse that all of its daughters, at age 18 are transformed into lesbian vampires who then haunt the woods around the town. To prevent their turned daughters from munching on the townsfolk, they feed them a steady diet of clueless tourists, waiting until the day a descendant of the knight who slew the first vamp appears and ends the curse.

Into this come James Cordon and Matthew Horne, two luckless sad sacks on a hiking holiday, because they don't have the cash for a real vacation. Like all other strangers to town they are directed to the village `guest house' which to their joy is also inhabited by 4 drop dead gorgeous, Nordic college students there to study the folklore of the place. As night falls and the town's daughters start to close in the situation rapidly becomes one of wondering if the sad sacks will become happy meals and the students become drop undead gorgeous.

As the film rolls we learn Horne is the last descendant of the original knight and while he can't stand up to his mentally abusive girl friend, he's now supposed to stand up to the queen of vampires.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well made and way better than critics say February 5, 2010
Okay, another vampire film ... again. And another attempt at a comedy-horror film ... again. And critics were mixed on whether this was worth your time or simply mediocre. Well, to be honest, going in expecting just an average film at best actually made me come out saying "that film was great" and for all the good reasons!!!

This is an English film which at times follows the same line as Shaun of the Dead but instead of zombies our antagonists are vampires (or more correctly, lesbian vampires). The stars are two blokes, one who just broke up with his girlfriend and another who wishes he had a girlfriend. With the sadness that comes from being dumped, our hero decides they should take a trip hiking just to get away and clear his head, so they randomly pick a place out in the rural section of England. Unbeknownst to our heroes they land up in a village cursed by an ancient vampiress Camilla (see LeFanu's novella) where all woman who turn 18 become walkers of the dead. At the same time our heroes arrive, a group of college co-eds are in the town to write a paper on the folklore around Camilla and her "legacy". So begins a film of many things: a sex comedy, a gothic horror film, a British slapstick movie, and a gore fest, and to a lesser extent, an exploitation film. One would think that a film with lesbian vampires would be no more than exploitation but oddly it is not. Marketing of the film played on this but the film makers only followed the lead while mostly keeping it in the background as they followed the other paths that this film could follow.

I must admit this film was good in every way. First off, the film makers really got a great gothic and horror feel to it that you'd have seen in the old Universal horror films or the old Hammer horror films.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than I expected. June 24, 2010
I originally rented this movie thinking it was going to be my B movie for the week. I love to rent bad ones and get a giggle out of the cheesiness, but I was pleasantly surprised on how good this one is. Starts out a little slow, but it had me and my family laughing hard several times. The ax scene is the best. Not everyone is going to like this, but if you like vampires and goofiness you well like this. And even I compare it to Shaun of the Dead which I liked also. And for the guys out there plenty of chicks for you with the whole lesbian theme.
