Amazon.com Review

Want to live forever? Get a taste for what it's like with Vampire: The Masquerade Redemption, the first computer role-playing game based on the tremendously popular dice-and-paper and live-action RPG from White Wolf Game Studio. Die-hard fans will grumble a bit at some of the translation concessions from book to hard drive. The vampiric disciplines in particular are less flexible and occasionally more hassle than they're worth--sure, you can turn into a wolf, but you can't return to your natural form until the time limit expires. Still, these limitations don't interfere with the gameplay, which is fast moving, challenging, and genuinely creepy. Graphics and sounds are well designed, and along with the plot they evoke the mood of gothic horror that has made Vampire so popular.

The single-player mode locks you into the story line of Christof, a medieval crusader who blunders into immortality at the fangs of an ancient Brujah vampire. Christof's damnation and search for redemption lead him from the Prague of the Dark Ages to modern New York City. Multiplayer options include local area network and Internet play as well as the ability to create and run your own stories for other players. The manual is beautiful and helpful, a rare combination. Clearly, the designers took their cue from White Wolf, as evidenced by the clarity of text and carefully chosen illustrations. Though Redemption is well worth playing, gamers should be warned that the save-game feature is irritating and often beyond the player's control and that the installation requires at least 720 MB (and up to 1.3 GB!). Despite these flaws, the game is still wicked fun and merits plenty of praise. --Rob Lightner

Pros:

  • Fantastic graphics and sound
  • Rich online storytelling options
  • Perfectly captures the mood and settings of Vampire: The Masquerade and Vampire: The Dark Ages
Cons:
  • Enormous installation size
  • Irritating save-game feature
  • Not strictly faithful to original White Wolf rules

4.0 out of 5 stars Got Redemption?, August 18, 2001

This review is from: Vampire: The Masquerade Redemption (CD-ROM)
Though I'm a die-hard White Wolf fan, I found this game overall excellent. True, the disciplines don't follow the books exactly, but how could you possibly translate them to a video game. They require Storytelling action to perform properly. The video game does its best to maintain their functions. Among the concessions:

* Spirit Touch identifies items

* Celerity, Potence, and Fortitude must be activated and have a limited duration

* Drinking blood is a discipline with success based upon your rating in it

* All discipline powers are rated 1 to 5

It works well. The coterie tools are excellent, giving you advanced control over what you want the members of your party to do. Why didn't I give it five stars? Mainly, the lack of control. Sometimes a glitch traps my hero in a staircase or my coterie won't move so my character can walk around them. The characters don't corner so well, either, getting hung up on simple obstacles (especially in the havens). Still, the plot is miraculous. It follows Vampire's theme of being a "storytelling game of personal horror." The character spends his entire unlife searching for lost love, his last link to his ever-fading humanity.

I loved the game and got quite far with it, until for no reason it kept bouncing me back to the desktop. Tried getting advice from activision and still no joy. Love the game, the bugs are a bother

It was programmed for Mac OS 9, so my Mac starts classic to play it. I doubt it will work on Intel Mac processors.

Music is great; graphics are beautiful. Story line is interesting, especially if you liked "Vampire: The Masquerade", the pen-and-paper RPG, even if it does not follow the same rules and the enemy vampires are less individualized and easier to destroy (and much more numerous accordingly).

Has some programming bugs and crashes relatively frequently; make sure you save the game more often than it crashes! (In my case, it will ALWAYS crash upon using the subjective view the first time I run it; so after starting the computer I run the game, I quit it, and then run it again, this time without much problem).

As far as I have seen, my Mac has not been damaged by the game (contrast with another review for the same product in Amazon).
