one of the better vampire series from the 1990's,
By "ruthven1819" (Chattanooga, TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Vampire Odyssey (Paperback)
From the 1990's, there has been a steady stream of vampire novels published. Many have been forgettable, but there were a few gems along the way. One of the brightest of these gems was Scott Ciencin's "Vampire Odyssey" series, which started with "The Vampire Odyssey" and continued through "The Wildlings" and "Parliament of Blood." Very well-written and full of evocative scenes that have stuck with me for years, Ciencin's vampire books are definitely worth a look. If I have a couple of complaints, they are that Ciencin goes a little too far over the top at times and his creatures bear very little resemblance to vampires as we know them. But if you are looking for fast, action-packed novels full of horror and interesting characters, you could do a lot worse than these.

Despite the dated style of the cover art, which is representative of the period of its publication, the story is actually very engaging and I found myself liking it, despite my personal preconceptions. Being a rapacious reader of White Wolf publications and a connoisseur (sp?) of the vampire lore / canon laid down through numerous gaming supplements and fiction series, I initially began reading this book with an arched brow and snobbish smirk on my face. I am happy to admit that the pace, content, and overall style presented by the author was smooth and subtley provocative, plausible, and elicits an effortless assimilation and acceptance of vampires, their abilities, and the application of these concepts in moving the story forward through the next installments (which I am not done reading at the time of this review!).
Despite what you might initially think about the concept of vampires in popular fiction, make a deliberate effort to suppress that and pick up this book. I believe you'll find it worthwhile.

This was the start of a long love afair with vampire novels.,

This review is from: The Vampire Odyssey (Paperback)
The first book of a trilogy that was to start me reading well over 250 vampire novels. It is an action packed and wonderfully written series. This book sets the ground work for a vampire adventure that you will remember for a long time. The two main characters(Dani and Sam) are two of the most interesting creatures I have ever read about and years after reading this book, I still find myself thinking about them. If you can find this book... GET IT, you will enjoy it.

This is my favorite Vampire book,
By Ben T. (San Jose, CA) - See all my reviews

This book explodes in your face from the first few pages. I remember I read it in two sittings. I just could not put it down! It's kind of like a horrific rock video, but not in a bad way.
I felt like I was in this story. The darkness and horror will chill your blood. I've seen and read many vampire movies and books. Every story slightly redefines WHAT the "vampire" is. In this book, the male vampires are 100% evil. They have absolutley no redeeming qualities and are simply monsters in every way. That said, they are frightfully intelligent and ruthless. It's the female vampires, the half-lings, that still have some tiny shred of humanity left. And this is what makes the book interesting. I don't think I fully understood "blood lust" before reading this book. This story will show you a vampire in a way you've never seen them. After reading this I felt emotionally drained. I felt like my world had been darkness for the two days I read. This book will thrill you, it will exhaust you, and it will *scare* you. |
