This review is from: Buffy The Vampire Slayer/Angel AFX Exclusive 'Just Rewards' Spike Action Figure (Toy)
The vampire Spike, played by James Marsters on both "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" was a very popular character, which explains why there are almost as many Spike action figures as there are of Willow. There is the Spike "Beneath You" figure in a blue shirt hanging around the basement of Sunnydale High School all summer, the Punk Spike "Fool For Love" figure with his leather vest right before he picked up the leather coat of the Slayer Nikki Woods, and the shirtless, battered and bruised "Grave" Spike who has just been re-souled so he can "give the Slayer what she deserves." Then there is the Burning Spike "Chosen" figure which is solid yellow and wears the amulet, and the Spike who returns from the dead (again) for the fifth season of "Angel," wearing a black t-shirt and the amulet.
This brings us to the "Just Rewards" vampire Spike, which is also an "Angel" Spike rather than a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" spike. "Just Rewards" was the second episode of the fifth season of "Angel" (story by David Fury, teleplay by Fury and Ben Edlund) where Spike returns as a ghost and starts driving Angel crazy needling him about their past and their relationships with Buffy. Then again, Spike keeps disappearing and reappearing, so life is not all fish and chips for him either, while Angel also has to contend with the necromancer Magnus Hainsley, who controls and the dead.
This 6-inch Spike action figure has two things that make it unique in this current series of Spikes. First, he is shown in vampire form (you can barely tell but the fangs are there). Second, Spike is wearing is black leather trench coat. The arms are hard plastic, but the part of the coat on his torso is soft plastic (you cannot do much with it but it does move). The figure has sixteen points of articulation: head, coat, shoulders, biceps, elbows, wrists, thighs, knees, and boots. The figure also comes with a cross with an altar and a whole bunch of candles, a battleaxe, a stake, a bag of 0-Negative blood from a Blood Bank, and a railroad spike.
It would be nice if there was a Spike action figure in his long black coat without being in vampire face. I have the original Spike action figure like that, but he keeps falling off of his base (the disadvantage of having a peg for only one foot). With all of these action figures, fans of Marsters and the character he played for seven season on two shows should find one that appeals to them. With the combination of the vampire face and the black leather coat, the "Just Rewards" Spike would have to be given a prime candidate, not that anybody has to stop at just one Spike action figure. Joss Whedon knows I have not since I have them all.
