Editorial Reviews

Review

“An excellent addition to Sparks’ Love at Stakes series.” (Romantic Times)

“Sparks skillfully infuses her writing with a deliciously sharp wit, and the second in her sexy contemporary vampire series is wickedly fun.” (Booklist)

“An absolute delight! Can’t wait for the next book in the series!” (Lynsay Sands, USA Today Bestselling Author)

Mixing paranormal romance with humor, Sparks clearly has a style all her own, one that readers love. (USA Today's Happily Ever After blog)

About the Author

A former tap dancer and high school French teacher, New York Times bestselling author Kerrelyn Sparks has always searched for creative ways to express herself. A prolific reader since childhood, she discovered that writing her own stories provided the ideal way to combine her loves of comedy, language, and history. And what a relief that the voices in her head have led to a paycheck instead of a padded room! A native Texan, Kerrelyn lives with her husband in the Greater Houston area.

More About the Author

Kerrelyn Sparks is the New York Times bestselling author of the Love at Stake series. Her heroes are generally fanged or furry, but never suffer from cavities or fur balls. And in spite of a tendency to nibble or howl at the moon, they're still wonderfully romantic. Please feel free to visit www.kerrelynsparks.com where you can read excerpts, play vampire games, join the forum, or send Kerrelyn an e-mail. She loves hearing from readers!

If you have read the Love At Stake series you already have an inkling as to what the story will be like to a certain extent.

Dougal is one of the few remaining early members of the group that has not found a mate and then along comes Leah who not only brings out the MINE effect in him but reminds him of a love he lost 300 years ago.

Leah is not only beautiful, she is wicked smart and that is why she is there to help with some genetic research that needs to be done to fight off their latest adversary (a demon no less).

This is an off/on romance that in some places is a bit frustrating but still entertaining and the urban fantasy part of the plot keeps it from being too dopey or sugary sweet,

The injection of angels into this series in a subtle way that does not feel copied in any way adds much to this story and I really enjoyed that part and wonder what she plans for the future in that area since we are running out of characters to find mates for in this series.

Bottom Line: I like it but I can only give it 4 Stars because it is written almost to a formula in the romantic plots (the overarching UF plots are still excellent) and while you never really tire of seeing the guy get the girl this series needs some intangible things added to get it to 5 Star level in my opinion. Am I going to keep buying these books, of course, they are part of my addiction and I love seeing the old characters which unlike many series don't disappear or become cardboard cutouts but this series needs a injection of something because the best books in the series were written much earlier in the series.

This was my first time reading a Kerrelyn Sparks book. Although I have seen her books in stores and online I just hadn't gotten around to reading her work.

First opinion was this is kind of a throw back in terms of vampire lore. Compared to current vamp/PNR out today. Sparks book vamps can levitate and cannot be seen in mirrors. I felt a bit nostalgic while reading this. This is book 14 of her Love at Stake Series.

Leah and Dougal met under hilarious circumstances and I dare say it was the funniest moment of the book. Having never read this series I can tell right of that "Vanna" must be a running joke. I also fell right into this series and can honestly say you can read this as a standalone. Although there is a history with these characters I didn't feel lost or out of the loop.

I found the story of Leah and Dougal sweet and endearing. The right amount of love, angst and suspense.

BAM! Book number 14! Can you believe it?!

Usually by book 7 of a series you'll find a lull in story, or repeated story-lines. Fortunately Sparks keeps it fresh with this newest installment of Love at Stake. The humor is still there, but you also get a very serious story of a guy that feels less of a man, and an awkward geek finding love.

I think part of the success of this series are that the characters are so different. I've heard authors say that their characters speak to them, so I can only imagine the 100's of voices that must be flowing through Sparks' mind at one time. lol. From book to book you get individuals with wonderfully unique quirks.

I don't want to give away too much plot, because there is a wonderfully heart warming twist and it would stink if you knew about it before hand. Just know that Dougal and Leah are meant to be. They have their ups and downs, but what fun would it be if they didn't!?

The action in this one is kept to a minimum, but the villain story line in Asia is still going strong. Hopefully in the next book we'll get to see a good 'ol fashion showdown between our wonderful Romatech saviors and the evil vamps causing problems out east.

So, great addition to the Love at Stake series! If you've read them to this point don't stop now! If you haven't checked out this series, pick it up today! You'll be in paranormal romance heaven :)

*OH! And guess who's back for another appearance?
That's right, VANNA ;)
Love that doll!

Reincarnation, lost loves, genetic, demons, and hulky vampires are all thrown together in this novel and it still came up wanting. Kerrelyn missed the crux of this story and failed to make it flow as she usually does. I couldn't wait to just get through this book and move on. After awhile it became tedious, hence the reason for the two stars.

Got this as a gift. My mum is a huge fan and reads these books like no tomorrow. She read it super fast and loved it! Said it was one of the best books in the series and that Kerrelyn's writing just gets better and better!

Dougal has been sitting in the background of the Love at Stake series since it began. He has been helping all of his friends and sitting on the sidelines while he has watched so many of his friends find their HEA and now he finally has a chance to fine his. When Dougal lost his hand in the fight with the malcontents, he thought his usefulness as a bodyguard was over. However, with the help of his friends and a prosthetic hand, he has been able to learn how to fight again and is ready for action.

Leah has always been too smart for her own good. Entering college at the age of 14 has caused her to become socially inept. However, by the time she graduates, not only does she have a medical degree, she is also well known for her genetic knowledge. Knowledge that the vampires at Romatech need to help them fight the humans who are being used in Mr. Hans army. Her introduction into the realm of vampires and were creatures is difficult for someone who has also lived there life searching for mysteries that can be solved through science and logic. However, someone who is dead all day and wakes every night fall does not fall into that world.

Anyone who follows this series is going to love this story. There are so many characters in this story that we know and love that we have the opportunity to catch up with. There are some wonderful new aspects to this story that are not usually discussed in the Love at Stake books. The introduction of the God Warrior angels was really well done and the way they were introduced helped them feel authentic and not like Kerrelyn was trying to copy any other stories that are out there. I also enjoyed the aspect of having reincarnation and angels in the same story.
