Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 6 Up–This oversize visual guide is ostensibly written by Archibald Brooks, a vampire slayer. It provides a wealth of information, such as the origins of vampires, their powers, shape-shifting abilities, myths, tips for spotting and protecting oneself from them. When Brooks is murdered in 1920, the guide is passed to his successor, Joshua Kraik, a private detective. Like other titles in the series, Vampireology presents its textual material with beautiful illustrations and an appealing layout. Booklets, flaps, foldouts, personal notes, letters, drawings, and other items complement the narrative and give it the feel of a journal. Vampire fans will find this volume irresistible.Donna Rosenblum, Floral Park Memorial High School, NY

Vampires are a very popular topic for movies, TV shows, books, and general discussion right now. Vampireology: The True History of the Fallen Ones is a visually beautiful and interactive book that takes you on a journey of being a researcher in search of the truth of vampires.

Reading through a fair share of vampire books, I don't often come across ones that have actually done such immense amounts of research about vampires while also adding in an enjoyable story element to keep the reader entertained.

The book itself is a pleasant mixture of a scrapbook with pop-out elements. It is a very fun read - turning the pages you never know what you will get to play with next. A lock of a vampire's hair (said to protect those who possess it from all vampires), a dagger, a shard of a legendary sword, and the correspondence letters between Joshua and Magdalena.

Vampireology: The True History of the Fallen Ones is a fun treat for vampire lovers and those who enjoy a more unique reading experience. It is for ages 10+ and I have to agree that those interested in vampires ages 10 and up will certainly enjoy it.

Another great addition to the Ology series!

Once you open the cover you can't help but get lost in the beauty of this epic world of the undead. The creators put so much effort into making Vampireology, that I am stunned with how much there is to explore and discover (there are even a few hidden laughs in there). On top of the splendor, there is a fantastic story that absolutely captivates you.

My daughter loves these books.
There's lots of interactivity in these books. It's not just printed words and pictures. There's pockets with trinkets and lots of stuff to explore and play with.

My daughter likes to read but I bet these books would be good for kids who don't like reading. There might be enough "cool things" inside the book to turn them on to reading.

My son was so excited to get this book. It came in a timely manner. It wasn't packaged well enough so it came with some damage on the spine from being placed in an envelope for mailing. We chose not to return it though --- the inside was fine.

These ology series are fantastic. My 13 year old son loves to read through them again and again. Disappointed the dagger wasn't something he could take out of the book. I was relieved.

Basically, this book is not about vampire lore or mythology. It's actually a specific novel of sorts, written as a journal. It does not have anything on actual vampire myths or legends, instead it's about a writer's creation. Here, vampires are fallen angels, aka demons. They aren't undead in this book, at least not according to the legends you and I know. The book is pretty, with lots of little notes hidden here and there, but no popout bits like the other "Vampyre the terrifying last journal of Dr Van Helsing". Here, the only sure method of killing a vampire is with the shards of an angelic sword, so staking and the like does little. This contradicts everything I have learned about the collected vampire mythos from various geographical locales. Thus, don't expect anything you read from this book to apply to legends or the vampires you see in movies. That said, the art is quite good, and definitely interesting. Even so, I feel it was a mistake to buy this book, since I wanted to learn more about the legends, both in mythology and in the movies.

My daughter has always loved these "ology" books, so when I saw that there is now one themed for vampires, I knew she would want to have this. The pictures are very pretty. Nice book for the teen vampire lover and a great gift for the price.
