Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Sandwiched between Arnould Galopin's Doctor Omega (1906) and Edgar Rice Burroughs' A Princess of Mars (1912), Gustave Le Rouge's masterpiece, Le Prisonnier de la Planète Mars (1908) and its sequel, La Guerre des Vampires (1909), are a Martian Odyssey in which young engineer Robert Darvel is dispatched to Mars ny the psychic powers of Hindu Brahmins. On the Red Planet, Darvel runs afoul of hostile, bat-winged, blood-sucking natives, a once-powerful civilization now ruled by the Great Brain. The entity eventually sends Darvel back to Earth, unfortunately with some of the vampires. The second volume deals with the war of the vampires back on Earth. Planetary romance blends here with "cosmic horror" as the characters switch from swashbuckling he-men to helpless bundles of gibbering terror.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mars and Bohemia, June 13, 2008
By David L. Vineyard (Oklahoma City, OK USA) - See all my reviews
Gustave Le Rouge's Vampires of Mars (and it's sequel War of the Vampires included in this same volume) is a fascinating tale that predates Edgar Rice Burroughs semminal A Princess of Mars (1911) by three years. The story following two adventurers to a Mars that is equal parts ERB, H.P. Lovecraft, H.G. Wells, and Edgar Allan Poe features unimaginable horrors and marvelous wonders mixed with the Bohemian and pointed satire of the author, a member of the Decadent movement. Brian Stableford's literate translation and adaptation and informative afterward are added bonuses for the reader who wants both a wonderful example of proto science fiction, and a well told yarn from an earlier age. Any reader of Verne, Wells, Burroughs, or Lovecraft will find something to enjoy here as our heroes are followed back to Earth by the Martian vampires and forced into a battle for the future of our world. This is only one of many books in the Black Coats Press catalogue that mix adventure, fun, and literacy, and a welcome addition to any library of classic science fiction from an earlier age. Too long unavailable in English, this novel from the early years of French sf and the French pulps will appeal to any reader who cherishes wild imagination, storytelling, and a glimpse into the rich past of the genre.
