This is such a wonderful book! Under Smith's talented hand, the main characters of her novel come to life tearing at our heartstrings in a way that few other novels have done. Having experienced love ourselves we are compelled to be sympathetic to Peredur and Tanwen's plight of a love that can never be...or can it?

Smith invites us to journey along with Peredur and Tanwen as they defy God, man and vampire in order to achieve their deepest desires. But is their love enough to surpass all the obstacles ahead of them or will Peredure promise to Saint Sanguinus be that which keeps them apart forever?

From the get go I was captivated by the main characters in this novel hardly putting the book down just to find out what would happen next. I can hardly wait to be reintroduced to them again in the second one! My only question is when will that be?

I enjoyed this book so much! Julia Phillips Smith has a knack of transporting the reader to another place in time where sights, sounds and smells are as real as sitting in my reading chair. Thank you for a book about vampires with such a rich history and complexity that it is completely believable. This was a joy to read and I can't wait for your next!

Vampires, Saints & Lovers (Book 1 in the Brotherhood of Blood Trilogy) goes beyond your typical vampire story and really gets into the heart of the characters, bringing the undead to life in vivid detail. The attention to setting and historical detail paint the time period in brilliant colors until you feel as if you’re breathing the same air as Peredur and Tanwen.

Dark and elemental, it brings the story to life with a passionate zeal that makes you care about the characters until the very last page and leaves you hungering for more.

I highly recommend you take a chance on Vampires, Saints & Lovers and lose yourself in a delicious tale!

"Surrender your expectations. Surrender your doubts. Surrender your fears. Surrender your strengths. Surrender your anger. Surrender your control." - Yasmine Galenorn, Darkling

as Peredur lies bleeding to death, he curses God for his fate and for denying him of having a future with the woman he loves.
a stranger appears by his side and offers him a second chance. Peredur accepts and becomes the newest member of the strange and elite Brotherhood.
author Julia Phillips Smith spins a unique tale of vampires, sacrifice and love. her story takes place in Wales during the late 600th century A.D. and she vividly captures the atmosphere of this period. the reader travels back in time to a society where warriors march off to battle against invading tribes and bring home the spoils of war; where women await with anticipation and dread the return of their loved ones; where the border between superstition and the supernatural was a thin line.
this worldbuilding was one of the best elements of the book. i also loved the romantic aspect and love triangle which played out among Peredur, Tanwen and Cavan.
although the story is given in different points of view, there is no confusion as to who is speaking or what is taking place. some readers may not be comfortable with this set-up but i think it was effective in clarifying events and connecting them together.
i had difficulty, though, in dealing with Peredur's turning after cursing God. it seems that this same God allowed him to become a vampire so that he can become one of the Brotherhood - a group of vampires really - whose objective is to stop their other "cousin" vampires from turning humans.
i was confused and tried to see the justice in all this. i also did not find out how the "cousin" vampires became vampires.

Saint Sanguinus is the first book in a new vampire trilogy, written by Julia Phillips Smith. My Lady and I read it aloud together in a little more than a couple of days. We only put it down twice, and it was a struggle to leave it both times.

The first time was on a Saturday night so we could go to sleep. The second time was on a Sunday afternoon to watch an NFL game. As soon as the game was over, we put Sunday Night Football on mute and finished the book.

It's a captivating story of...well, I don't think I'll give anything away.

I'll say this also...Ms Smith has crafted a believable mythology for her vampires. They are dark and ravenous; monsters more in the tradition of the vampire as deadly dangerous and blood thirsty. But it's not a horror story. It's a dark romantic adventure with appeal to men and women.

My Lady and I both liked it. We enjoyed the pacing of the story. It was something we could enjoy together. In fact, reading the story aloud together was a bonus.

Pick this one up. The characters stand up off the page to tell their stories. Ms Smith has a writing style that is comfortable. She invites you into the story and keeps you there. She understands how to build the story to a climax that closes this first chapter and sets up the next.

All together an outstanding debut.

This book introduced a new aspect of vampires that I hadn't come across before - The Brethren - but I failed to see why 'God' should be on their side against the 'real' vampires. The only differences I could see were that The Brethren all cursed God when they were about to die, only warriors were recruited to their ranks and they didn't indulge in sex. Otherwise I couldn't see why God should favor them when both The Brethren and the 'real' vampires both killed people when feeding off them. Peredur in fact raised this during the first confrontation between the two groups but the reason why The Brethren were 'better' was never explained.

The characters were a bit two dimensional except for Peredur and Cavan. Tanwen was a bit too obsessive to be real and some of her actions later in the book just didn't make sense to me.

Other than the above points, the book was reasonably interesting and the action moved along quite well, but I did not find the book difficult to put down. I don't think I would bother with the next book in the series.
