The tarot has been a part of Barbara Moore’s personal and professional lives for over two decades. In college, the tarot intrigued her with its marvelous blending of mythology, psychology, art, and history. Later, she served as the tarot specialist for Llewellyn Publications. Over the years, she has been active in the American Tarot Association and has spoken at tarot conferences around the United States. Barbara’s articles on the tarot have appeared in several tarot publications and in Llewellyn Publications New Worlds of Mind and Spirit magazine. She has also sat on the Tarot Journal editorial board. Barbara’s own education in the tarot has been and continues to be broad and enlightening. She has studied under renowned tarot scholars Mary K. Greer and Rachel Pollack, and she has taught the tarot to all manner of would-be tarot readers.

Barbara enjoys the challenge of giving a voice to tarot cards and oracle decks.  She has had the good fortune to write books for several decks, including A Guide to Mystic Faerie Tarot, The Gilded Tarot Companion, The Hip Witch Tarot, Enchanted Oracle and The Mystic Dreamer Tarot.

Tarot has been a part of Barbara Moore's life for over twenty years. Right from the start, tarot intrigued her with its marvelous blending of mythology, psychology, art, history, mystery, and magic, as well as its eminently practical applications. In addition to providing professional readings, Barbara consults for both Llewellyn Worldwide and Lo Scarabeo and is one of the founders of the Minnesota Area Tarot Symposium (http://minnesotatarot.com/).

Barbara enjoys giving a voice to tarot cards not only by doing readings but also by writing the books that accompany decks. Well, this is a deck about vampires. I have to say bloodtaking, because I want to say "breathtaking", but vampires don't take your breath. The illustrations in this deck are absolutely stunning, appearing to be photographs of the scenes. The scenes are dark and Gothic. Of cause there is blood shown in several of the scenes, but maybe only 1 or 2 cards might appear to be gory to some. Very few actual people are pictured; what appears to be humans, in the vast majority of cards, are actually vampires. The younger men and women pictured are attractive and sexually alluring. The older vampires shown are not as attractive as the younger ones, but can also be sexually alluring. The authors of this set present the idea that vampires are created creatures, who were once human, are no longer so, but have retained some aspects of their humanity, and there is a constant struggle between the monstrous and human sides of their existence, with no happy conclusion. Besides vampires, many of the cards picture other creatures of the night. I won't speak further about the illustrations, because I don't want to affect your initial viewing of these cards, but on several of the cards you will be surprised at what is pictured; a bit different than what is pictured in most tarot decks. The set contains a 158 page, soft covered book. It opens with a discussion of the relationship between vampire lore and ourselves, both as individuals and as members of society. Next is a brief, but good discussion, of the structure of a tarot deck. This is followed by a discussion of each of the cards of the deck. There is a full color picture of each of the cards, which is unusual in a companion book. There are core aspect words given for each card, which I found very helpful for interpreting cards in this deck, as well as those in other decks. The Majors are discussed using key words, traditional meaning, vampire story, dark approach, human approach, light approach, and divinatory meaning. The Minors lack key words and traditional meaning in their discussions. The discussion of the cards is followed by section on how to perform a reading of the cards, followed by examples of spreads. The book closes with a section on how to throw a vampire party; this is something I will pass upon. For lovers of vampire and Gothic themed tarot decks, this set is a special treat.

I thought this deck would be cool based on seeing the pics of the cards online, but the reality is even better. I have been collecting tarot decks for years, and used my first deck, the Rider-Waite, exclusively for the first ten years or so. I discovered the Robin Wood Tarot and started using that, again for several years, occasionally going back to my original when I felt like it. Since then I've purchased or been given about five more decks, but haven't been tempted again to switch the one I actively use until recieving this deck. Since I got it, every reading I've done has been with the Vampires Tarot... I love it that much! The case it comes in and the book that comes with it are both high quality, and I love how the book has pics of each card on the page with the card's interpretations. The fact that the major arcana doesn't have the names on the cards, only the numbers, takes a little getting used to, but once I'd just glanced through the deck a time or two, I found I could locate enough of the usual symbology used on those cards in most decks to figure out at a glance which one the card is without looking it up, even before I used them enough to recognize them in their own right. That is another thing I consider an asset to this deck. Though the artwork is unique, they don't neglect the deeper symbology of the tarot.
