Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Liss MacCrimmon Ruskin, proprietor of the Moosetookalook Scottish Emporium in small-town Moosetookalook, Maine, is in charge of planning the town’s All Hallows Festival. She and her husband determine that the Chadwick mansion, rumored to contain gangster Blackie O’Hare’s hidden fortune, will be the perfect setting for the haunted house, so she and her committee begin the transformation. As they work on the house, items disappear and reappear, and then Liss finds her cousin Ned’s bloody body on a couch. There is also evidence that someone is digging for treasure in the basement. When the police arrest Hilary, Ned’s former girlfriend, Liss investigates at her aunt Margaret’s request, while Margaret takes in Hilary’s 12-year-old son, Boxer. Liss ultimately solves Ned’s murder and identifies the treasure hunter and prankster, but not before she almost loses her own life tying all the loose ends together. Small-town life, a sympathetic main character, and well-developed secondary characters, all framed by preparations for Halloween, compensate for the rather easily identifiable killer. --Sue OBrien

in her seventh adventure, Lisa MacCrimmon is now married and looking to settle into married life with her husband, Dan Ruskin. Lisa is on the town's Halloween committee and is busy organizing a very scary night centred around the spooky Chadwick mansion. The mansion is now owned by the town of Moosetookalook and Lisa is determined to make her haunted house the scariest yet! However all plans are ruined when a dead body is discovered in the mansion. The body turns out to be her cousin, Ned, who everyone thought was still in jail, serving a sentence for manslaughter. At her aunt's insistence, Lisa investigates Ned's death trying to find his killer.

Vampires, Bones and Treacle Bones was my first introduction to the Lisa MacCrimmon mysteries but it certainly won't be my last. I was immediately taken in by the quaint town of Moosetookalook, where there is town gossip aplenty! Lisa introduces readers to the colorful characters of Moosetookalook, including gossipy Dolores the librarian, who I'm sure will get into trouble one day with all her gossipy ways!

The mystery does hint to a earlier mystery involving Ned, and that being the reason he was in jail for manslaughter, but this revelation doesn't take anything away from the story for a new reader. Instead I was busy trying to solve the mystery and figure out who wanted to murder Ned.

I loved the history behind Chadwick mansion, where a smuggler used to live. With no relatives the property was turned over to the city, but there were rumors of buried treasures. Buried treasures, hidden rooms, secret passages... well let's just say with the murder mystery as well, it is clear to see why I was hooked on this mystery!!

If you're looking for a great Halloween mystery I highly recommend Vampires, Bones and Treacle Bones. It's the perfect mystery to read alongside a bowl of candy!

This is the first book I've read by this author but it is Book 7 in the "Liss MacCrimmon Scottish" series. I was still able to very much enjoy this series without having read the previous books. However, I am now eager to hunt down copies of the older ones. This was such a great example of a cozy mystery. The setting is the small Maine town of Moosetookalook. At the opening of this story, Liss (female sleuth) is involved in putting together a community fundraiser for Halloween. There is a haunted house to put together - Yay! "Haunted houses" are always fun in these types of mysteries. In addition to the strange goings-on at the old Chadwick mansion (haunted house), there is the legendary gangster's lost loot that some characters are fascinated by and try to find. If that wasn't enough, there a couple of missing parolees, hidden rooms, and a mysterious stranger living in town. I liked that the author gave a believable reason for Liss to be playing detective. I appreciated the humor thrown in the mystery as well as the suspenseful situations. The situation with 12yr. old Boxer kept me interested as well - totally pulled at my heartstrings. The characters really helped make for a great story in addition to the mystery. I loved this book, can't wait for the next one, plan on hunting down the previous ones.

Another fast paced romp thru Moosetookalook! Love that name! Love these stories; they flow and never become dull, and this one is no exception. If you like small town stories, you'll love this one! The characters are not quirky or dumb, just people to whom one would live next door, that is if your neighbor were a murderer! Someone is, again, in Moosetookalook, but I highly recommend you read it to discover all the twists and turns!!!

Apparently this is about the 4th book in a series (but the first I have read in this series). This book was well written and an easy read. I enjoyed it enough to where I would like to read the other books in the series in sequence.
