Book Description

In the town of Vigil’s Rest, vampires haunt the forest, luring young girls to their doom with promises of forbidden love. After Deborah Poole, a local beauty queen goes missing, the town’s long history of cover-ups begins to unravel. She returns from the dead, more angel than demon, and acting as a spirit of mercy in the haunted forest that has known only vengeance.

Oppression and tightly held secrets keep Deborah from love for decades, finally shattering when the unlikely fulfillment of an ancient prophecy gives her a new chance at love and humanity in the form of a disillusioned teenage girl, Annabelle. But to sever Deborah’s chains to the past, the duo must unravel the 200 year old mystery of the forest’s haunting and the town’s dark past.

"A scary, powerful book from a very good author." ~GoodLesbianBooks.com

About the Author

Cassandra Duffy spent most of her childhood being precocious, which stopped being entertaining or impressive when she grew into an adult, at which point she had to start being precious. After being an outcast child prodigy it was no surprise when she graduated from one of the many fine University of California schools a year early to follow her girlfriend in a cross country move. She writes a free-lance sex advice column found in various lesbian magazines and dating websites. Her short story collections and novels can be found on her website. Two of her greatest prides are being a true California girl and author of some truly naughty things. She is a dutiful partially-Asian daughter who is beloved by her fairly traditional Korean father who thinks having a gay daughter is just fine as long as she keeps playing coed flag football. She is a stereotypical younger sister, and an adoring aunt of a hilarious little boy. Being a modern techno-freak, gamer-girl, she spent most of her childhood dreaming of being a video game designer, but changed her mind and brought her dreams of world building and story-weaving to writing unique romance novels. Cassandra is a gleefully monogamous girlfriend to an earthbound goddess who was once her high school bully, but has done a magnificent job of making up for all the school girl nastiness ever since. When she isn’t being an avid fang girl (vampire fan girl) or tormenting people in online gaming, she lives and writes in Winter Park, Florida with her partner and soul mate Nichole and their two cats: Dragon and Josephine.

I had certain expectations going into Vampires of Vigil's Sorrow, vampire and paranormal books are fairly plentiful and the conventions are tried and true, but I am pleased to say that it continuously surprised me and challenged them throughout. This book is about so much more than just the sexy, tortured blood suckers that populate so much of pop culture these days. This book is about history. Women's history and the lingering psychic stain that centuries of inequality have left behind. Vampires in this case, give Duffy the oppourtunity to have women experience a broader swath of time and more varied social systems and attitudes than they otherwise would. This book definitely has a strong undercurrent of anger at the careless oppression and abuse generations of women have had to survive, but it also does a wonderful job of transporting you back in time with a grace and richness that many authors should be jealous of while mxing in some true horror. Duffy is not playing around.

Now, I don't want to make this book sound too dark or too daunting. It is also sweet, romantic and deeply moving. It follows a handful of different women who are all connected in one way or another through several different time periods. All of them moved me and stirred my affections. Debbie especially tugged at my heart. Her beautiful, yearning soul and dashed hopes were shattering. It moves well, supplying questions and answers and a good pace before eventually coming together to an ending that ties everything up in a very satisfying manner.

I definitely recommend, especially if you're a fan of paranormal and period settings. But if you can't take horror be warned, Duffy is not afraid to bring the scares.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cassandra Duffy is the real thing, May 18, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A gifted fantasist whose American dystopias (whether post-apocalyptic far West or small-town Vermont in the 1950s) ring true as settings for very queer love stories between talented and variously haunted young women. Every one of these stories has passion, beauty, wit, and sexiness. The Vampires of Vigil's Sorrow depicts the evolution of a New England town away from its Founding Fathers' cruel patriarchal order, through a series of fateful encounters between "chosen" girls over a span of decades. There is one male hero, as well, a grieving father whose willingness to change for the love of his child, begins the slow "unhaunting" of Vigil's Sorrow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creepy Vampires and Lovely Women December 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I never thought I'd give a vampire story 5 stars but Cassandra Duffy always manages to write intriguing stories with complex and deep characters. This gem was no exception. You will find no flashy Hollywood vampire cliches in this unique story of young women that are lured into becoming vampires. The story transpires over a couple of centuries in New England focusing on pre-Revolutionary war, the 1950s, and present day with expertly written dialogue and scenery to immerse you in those time periods. The story weaves creepy woods, scary monsters, and vampire lore with amazingly sweet and innocent love stories of young women lost but then found again. You'll have to read it to find out!
