5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous and dark
Okay, I'm 34 and I bought this for myself. I was a little surprised to see that it is aimed at the 9-12 crowd. I LOVE it though. Finished it quickly and then went through it again to take in all the details. Nice stuff. A little dark for the young'uns though. I enjoyed that it is presented as a story rather than a "fact" book. Lots of goodies to enjoy. Highly...

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great book, imaginative and detailed., November 2, 2007

This review is from: Vampyre: The Terrifying Lost Journal of Dr. Cornelius Van Helsing (Hardcover)
This book is the lost journal of a vampire hunter, Cornelius Van Helsing, related to the Van Helsing from Bram Stoker's Dracula. In involves references to Johnathan and Mina Harker with a twist. The book's layout is similar to that of the Ology books (dragonology, wizardology, Egyptology, and Pirateology). This book explores the legend and lore of the vampire from which Bram Stoker himself created his novel. It seems like something for a kid but it's imaginative design makes it worth it to get for teens and adults as well. There is also a surprise at the end so read the pages carefully.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun read and great gift for Dracula fans, December 18, 2008
This review is from: Vampyre: The Terrifying Lost Journal of Dr. Cornelius Van Helsing (Hardcover)
The target age group for this book is 9-12, but I enjoyed it even as an adult. The premise is interesting - a hitherto lost journal of Dr Cornelius Van Helsing [brother of "Dracula's" Van Helsing] is found and chronicles Cornelius' efforts at solving the mystery of his brother's strange illness. Cornelius is accompanied by his trusted aide, Gustav de Wolff. The pair travel from London to Transylvania and encounter many adventures along the way, and face dangers of the most macabre kind. The book is presented in an epistolary format, i.e. a series of journal entries. Each page is beautifully-illustrated with maps, authentic-looking photographs, inserts [such as a booklet on vampyre myths and lore], a rub-the-patch feature that reveals a secret message, fake wolf fur, sketches, pull-the-tabs, lift-the-flaps,a booklet that contains spells of protection, court documents, etc.

All in all, a fun & interesting read for young and not-so-young fans of "Dracula"!

5.0 out of 5 stars Spine tingling book about the powerful undead mythical vampires in fantasy, December 25, 2009

This review is from: Vampyre: The Terrifying Lost Journal of Dr. Cornelius Van Helsing (Hardcover)
We all know about vampires we all fear them, yet we love to read watch and know about them. Fictional folklore mythical creatures created for literature and cinema are stampede by us to buy books and watch movies that have anything to do with these blood sucking bat like creatures that hate day light wear strange capes, sleep in boxes, and have very long fangs. Dangerous, immortal and hellish, the vampire has been the most feared mythical creature of all time and by far one of the most powerful. This highly interactive book features absolutely everything anyone ever wanted to know about vampires. This book includes foldout maps, booklets of folklore riddles and so much more. It's made up as a journal recounting Dr.Helsings journey into the world of vampires and his desire to rid the world of these predators. I have always been fascinated by this myth and the folklore that accompanies it, maybe because I have an enormous respect and wonderment in the fascinating world of bats or chiroptera as scientists would call them and, I found this book entertaining in a deep and thoroughly educational way with which for any vampire buff is definitely a must have to own or read as a book.

5.0 out of 5 stars most amazing interactive book ive read, October 20, 2010
i am a 21 year old girl and cant get enough of this book. it kept me reading it right to the end. although i wouldnt recomend it to a young child because some of the content may be a little graphic (entry about a woman who drained bodies of blood to bathe in it,etc.) but for a mature kid of maybe 13+ it would be great.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Buy for Dracula Fans, September 13, 2008
This review is from: Vampyre: The Terrifying Lost Journal of Dr. Cornelius Van Helsing (Hardcover)
I just bought this book at Borders for $2.99, and it's definitely worth the $2.99--the print work itself is worth it. Five bucks, maybe not, but $2.99, sure. Like the novel, it is written in epistolary fashion. Corenelius Van Helsing is purportedly the brother of Abraham and he's following up on the supposed death of Dracula. There are pop ups and odd stuff galore, such as the "wolf hair' in the envelope that the other reviewer mentions, as well as lockets featuring Mina and Jonathan. I would not have bought this if Dracula were not my favorite novel, but I think it would be a fun thing to give as a gift--esp. if you give Halloween gifts like I do. Vlad the Impaler is also mentioned, so it's apparent that the authors are familiar with both the novel and some of the history surrounding the story. This was located in the children's section of the store, which I think may be a poor audience choice and part of the reason for the discounted price.

This review is from: Vampyre: The Terrifying Lost Journal of Dr. Cornelius Van Helsing (Hardcover)
I bought this book for my 9 year old son and 12 year old daughter for Halloween. It was so neat that I went ahead and gave it to them early. They love this book! It has all sorts of neat little notes and windows to open up. My son loved the wolf hair. Great book for kids and adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative Spin On Vampyres, August 23, 2007
By
This review is from: Vampyre: The Terrifying Lost Journal of Dr. Cornelius Van Helsing (Hardcover)
Cornelius Van Helsing has no intention of following in his famous brother's footsteps, until his brother falls prey to a mysterious illness which Cornelius suspects may be due to a Vampyre. And so, this reluctant adventurer sets out with his man-servant Gustav to discover if his brother's arch nemesis is truly dead. This "journal" alternates between Cornelius and Gustav, providing different takes on the sinister events that unfold. The book is beautifully presented with plenty of interactives like hidden letters which you have to rub in order to access their secrets, and wonderfully detailed pop-ups. I would highly recommend this to any vampyre enthusiast whether they be in the 9-12 year old range or even adults.
