5.0 out of 5 stars Van Cliburn at his best. September 9, 2009

This DVD has been a long time coming and is certainly a welcome addition to the Van Cliburn collection. The B&W video is taken from live solo recitals given by Van Cliburn in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. The program is outstanding starting with the monumental sonata in B minor by Franz Liszt recorded in 1960. The remainder of the program is from 1962 and contains the following:

Chopin: Scherzo no. 3
Liszt: Sonetto 123 del Petrarca and Mephisto Waltz
Scriabin: Nocturne for the Left Hand, Op. 9, No. 2
Debussy: Prelude "La terrasse des audiences du clair de lune"
Scriabin: Etude Op. 8, No. 12 (the liner erroneously lists this work as No. 2)
Chopin: Etude Op. 10, No. 12

Van Cliburn was at his peak during this time and these solo recitals clearly show what an amazing pianist he is. The Russian audiences admired and loved him and this is a testament to his outstanding artistry. His keyboard demeanor is also interesting and refreshing to watch. He sits at the keyboard and plays without any gyration or weird facial expressions. He simply sits at the piano and makes music.

The one downside to this DVD is the actual production quality of the disc. I found the video to lack sharpness and contrast and the sound was in mono. This is obviously how the recitals were recorded in Moscow back in the early 1960s. But, with technology today, we could have it so much better. I extracted the video and audio from the DVD and in less than two hours, was able to improve the sharpness, contrast, and brightness in the video. I also converted the soundtrack to stereo and improved its balance and dynamics which enhanced the overall sound quality. Why VAI did not improve and re-master this DVD is beyond me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cliburn in Moscow. What else can you say? April 21, 2013

Tremendous video and audio, considering the time in history and the source. The Russian audiences certainly appreciated Cliburn's playing, and it is no wonder viewing these performances.
