Editorial Reviews

This visually stunning documentary about the most popular painter of the past century features the world famous collection of the Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh in Amsterdam. A museum dedicated exclusively to van Gogh would have been inconceivable to the painter himself –he felt he was too misunderstood by the public to be appreciated. How could he have imagined that his paintings, 100 years after his death, would sell for millions of dollars?

This beautiful profile of Vincent van Gogh and his work was filmed at locations in the Netherlands, Belgium and France, and features dozens of his most beloved paintings. The artist’s role in the Post-Impressionist movement is assessed, and his visual style and technique are examined in a way that will help the viewer appreciate Vincent’s revolutionary contributions to modern art. This loving portrait of a tormented but brilliant artist will be enjoyed by van Gogh’s countless fans for years to come.

3.0 out of 5 stars A balanced narrated slide show of works, but short, November 26, 2007
This review is from: Van Gogh - A Museum for Vincent (1990) (DVD)
A narrated (often by quotes from Vincent's letters to Theo) slide show of Van Gogh's works interlaced with illustrating them video clips, but without expert interview-like commentaries directly spoken from the screen. The selection of works is well balanced between all periods of his 10 year long carrier including his early works not shown else illustrating the development of Van Gogh's talent. Seems to be slightly inferior to the 1997 "Biography - Vincent Van Gogh: A Stroke of Genius" by A&E.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good as an intro, but..., April 11, 2007
This review is from: Van Gogh - A Museum for Vincent (1990) (DVD)
If you're new to the world of Vincent Van Gogh then you will find this documentary informative. I was expecting the quality of direction to be more engaging since the production is about a great artist but nevertheless it has good coverage of his paintings and the commentary gives you a good perspective on the artist's life and his work.

However, if, like me, you've seen the movie 'Lust for Life (1956)' starring Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn and/or if you have reference books about Vincent Van Gogh then you will find this production nothing but a DVD collection of Vincent Van Gogh's paintings more or less.

It's not a 'how to DVD' either because it's not about his brush strokes and his era, etc. This production is a tribute to the artist by group of people who loved to do it.
