ATTENTION: Fans of the early Van Der Graaf Generator!!, July 22, 2006
This review is from: Van der Graaf Generator: The Live Broadcasts (DVD)
Finally we can now see the original line-up of V.D.G.G.--in performance of two songs from the 1970 album "The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other". These are very rare German TV takes and they are: 1)"Whatever Would Robert Have Said?" and 2)"Darkness". Incredibly, not much video document survives anywhere of the early V.D.G.G., so it's a real treasure to be able to revisit these performances and therefore see firsthand just how heavy and intense Peter Hammill and company really were!
These two cuts are super-rare and have not been released before
--but then again the other performances on this DVD are rare enough--but the others have been released on other DVD's fairly recently and you might already have them (buy this DVD anyway for the first two rarities). The other songs are: "Theme One" and "A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers" from the 1970 (also) album "Pawn Hearts" (fantastic of course!)(these two are filmed in a studio setting, and very dramatically). And to round things out, there is a live concert from 1975 at the Palais des Expos in France. The songs featured in this concert are: "The Undercover Man", "Arrow", "Scorched Earth", and "The Sleepwalkers". This concert shows once again just how unique and intense Van Der Graaf Generator were in performance. However, after viewing this French concert you will have a burning desire to find and strangle the French camera operators. You will understand. But really, the V.D.G.G. are superb in this 1975 concert also. These are rarities which all fans of Van Der Graaf
Generator will definitely want in their collection.

A Unique Look at a Unique Band, August 13, 2006
This review is from: Van der Graaf Generator: The Live Broadcasts (DVD)
Van der Graaf Generator Live Broadcasts is worth its weight in gold. There was never a band as unique as Van der Graaf (and probably never will be). This DVD is a rare insight into just how good this band was "live". "A Plague of Lighhthouse Keepers" has to be seen to be believed.
The film quality is very good especially considering this footage is from 1970 - 1975. The sound quality is even better.
