Book Description

Van der Graaf Generator - The Book by Jim Christopulos and Phil Smart.

A history of the band Van der Graaf Generator 1967 to 1978.

Van der Graaf Generator are one of the most unique and important groups to emerge from the British 'underground' of the late 60s. Throughout the 70s, they created a body of work like no other which in turns excited, overwhelmed, electrified, bedazzled, frustrated, and moved fans and critics alike. With their records and extreme live performances, they earned an intense international cult following creating music which was considered brilliant by some and difficult by others, but which over the years has continued to exert a widespread, powerful influence.

Now back together again, Van der Graaf continue to be a source of interest for fans, musicians, and the critics who have universally lauded their reformation. Sold out concerts and a new album which has garnered unanimous acclaim give light to the fact that interest in this most original group is running at an all time high.

Finally, for the first time ever, the insider's story is presented. With up-to-date commentary from all past and present members of the band, input from over sixty others (including celebrity admirers, associates, former employees, friends, and family members), Van der Graaf Generator - The Book delves into the joyous, humorous, bizarre, and somtimes difficult inner-workings of a genius rock group.

"It's been fascinating to find out so much that I didn't know about the band I'm in." - Guy Evans

5.0 out of 5 stars Kindle version is excellent! January 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As a proud owner of the full hard-copy tome, I was wondering whether it would be worth it to have the Kindle version as well. No pictures, obviously, which is a large part of the attraction of the larger book. But then I remembered how READABLE the book was... I plowed through it like it was an edge-of-yer-seat thriller... so I figured what the heck. Well, I needn't have worried. The book is every bit as engrossing on second read. And no annoying typos or scanning errors... this is a well produced version for Kindle. Money well spent. I hope it helps to finance Volume II...??

5.0 out of 5 stars From the co-Author May 7, 2008
Format:Hardcover
Unfortunately, this book is not available in the U.S. If anyone is interested, you can get it through the British Amazon site (amazon.co.uk) or the VdGG website (vandergraafgenerator.co.uk) [I tried not to give a star rating but the system wouldn't let me submit this mssg without doing so; so, five stars natch!]

5.0 out of 5 stars Intro-Outro Perspective of all things VDGG June 7, 2009
Format:Hardcover
A highly recommended and worthy effort by two long time VDGG followers who know of what they write about. A very large book packed with rare photos, articles, etc of the band throughout their history. Most followers will have already acquired this holy grail of Hammill/VDGG history and for those with inquiring minds a superb tomb to sit comfortably with as you review the music within on your player.

Phil Smart and Jim Cristopulos are to be saluted for their dedication in putting this together for us, the outcast and castways on the isle of VDGG/Hammill.

I can't praise the authors highly enough for the attention and detail and loving work that went into this definitive history of this great band. If you love VDGG's music, then really, this book needs to be on your shelf.
