5.0 out of 5 stars Van Halen's Best!!
After the astonishing success of their groundbreaking debut, Van Halen refused to rest on their laurels and quickly followed it up in 1979 with the release of VAN HALEN II. Although the first album is truly a landmark achievement in the hard rock/heavy metal genre, VHII is an even better record. The band has never sounded tighter. David Lee Roth's unique and raucous...

3.0 out of 5 stars II LITTLE
VAN HALEN-II: When VAN HALEN's sophomore album landed in 1979, an astute critic labeled the content: "...about as original as its title". He had a point, since VH II was about half as good as the band's trend-setting, pyrotechnic debut, mostly sounding like warmed over outtakes (shades of BOSTON's second effort DON'T LOOK BACK). Once the novelty of EDDIE's warp-speed fret...

Van Halen 2

The big mistake this album makes is starting with a poor, unnecessary and unwanted version of the old "You're no good" chestnut. Once you get past that `what were they thinking' moment, the album improves greatly. However, as good as many of these tracks are, this album is not as good as its predecessor. It is still a good and entertaining album but I'll just skip the first track from now on.
This is a Four Star release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Van Halen's sophomore effort proves the band was no one hit wonder 30 years on, March 10, 2009
This review is from: Van Halen II (Audio CD)
In March of 1979 (thirty years ago this month), California based hard rockers Van Halen unleashed their sophomore effort simply titled Van Halen II.
The album was produced by Ted Templeman whom helmed the first six albums for the band and this album has all but one track written by guitarist Eddie Van Halen, his drummer brother Alex Van Halen, lead singer David Lee Roth and bass player Michael Anthony. The band had momentum coming into their second album. They had a huge selling debut and opened for Journey on their Infinity tour and Black Sabbath on their last tour with Ozzy Osbourne before his firing in 1979 and upstaging them. Later in 1978, the band recorded its second album. Would it be as good as debut or would it stink, read on and find out (as I did when I first got on cassette tape in March, 1985).
The album kicks off with a rocking version of the 1974 Linda Ronstadt hit "You're No Good" with Michael's wild bass before it gives way into the song with Diamond Dave singing the verses and screaming during the chorus as Eddie and Michael sing the chorus and a superb remake which just burns. The hit "Dance the Night Away" follows and was the song that got most attention from this album and a great song. Next is "Somebody Get Me a Doctor" which was another great track. The rock just continues with "Bottoms Up" and a excellent hard rocker with excellent solos from Eddie (this time with phasers and processors making his guitar sound like an Army playing). The frantic rocker "Outta Love Again" ends the first half on a rockin note.
"Light Up the Sky" is a powerful rocker that starts the second half with a bang and the song is noted for its small Alex Van Halen drum solo section. The instrumental "Spanish Fly" follows and showcases Eddie's talents on classical guitar. "D.O.A." (which stands for Dead Or Alive for those curious) is next and one awesome hard rocker and the ending is to be heard to believe. "Women in Love" follows starts sounding to be a ballad in its guitar intro before rocking out. The closing rock radio stapler "Beautiful Girls" is a great song and a great way to close the album.
Van Halen II was to be the band's first US Top 10 album and second million seller. It also proved that Van Halen were in it for the LONG HAUL!
Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars You could call this album Van Halen I Part II, August 19, 1999

Some of the greatest American Rock and Roll ever! This album, along with the first, is Van Halen at their very best. "Light Up the Sky" has to be one of the best hard rock songs ever recorded, that you almost never hear. In the twenty-some odd years since these albums were released, no one else has been able to match Van Valen's early, and unparalleled style of no nonsence Rock and Roll.

Van Halen II is definitely a step down from the band's debut to my ears. Starting the album off with two straight covers gained them hits, but is not very original, and seems to be an indication of a struggle to come up with new material. This album always seemed like a summer party album to me. Great to listen to as background music at the beach or rolling around in your car with the windows down, but not something that I would take out for a serious headphone listen at home. Eddie shines on "Spanish Fly", and "Somebody Get Me A Doctor" and "Bottoms Up" are both patented David Lee Roth rants, but overall I find this album rather ho hum, and I think the first album blows it away.
