2.0 out of 5 stars not the best
It does it's job if your cat squats to pee. Since the lip does not raise in the back, a "high peeing" kitty can shoot urine into the seam. That urine can get out (trust me it happened and had to replace carpet). Also, the door breaks off, I've had a few of these boxes and every one easily snapped off.

This Extra Giant litter box is fantastic. I have used it, along with the Van Ness Liners Van Ness Extra Giant Drawstring Cat Pan Liners 6-pack and Nature's Logic Ponderosa Pine Cat Litter for 5 cats.

I use one litter box and this is the one. The box dimensions are high enough for our largest cat (22 lbs tabby -- just a really big boy and very long) and our littlest girl (8 lbs). I have always removed the plastic swing door as I have found this to be more of an annoyance for the cats and me (the scooper). The enclosed design of this tall box really lends itself to less tracking and more comfort for all different sizes of cats. It isn't so high that a smaller cat (or even a kitten) can't hop into the box.

The Van Ness liners makes for easy litter box changes and I recommend them as an adjunct product. This box is also very durable and will last years with cleaning and care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best On The Market, June 20, 2009

I've used Van Ness Extra Giant litter pans for years (I have four cats) and they are indeed the very best you can buy! I've tried others, but they can't compare. This extra giant keeps the litter from scattering when the cats dig. The best part is you can buy these at Wal-Mart for just under $15.00.

This is an awesome litter box. The litter box allows for plenty of room for my big kitty. Does not produce much dust from the litter.

I moved from one apartment to another. My old apartment had a nice large bathroom closet and I could just leave the door open a crack so I wouldn't have to worry about the whole room smelling like dirty litter. Our new apartment has a much smaller bathroom, and the only logical locations for a litter box would be in the dining room, hallway right outside the dining room, bedroom, or living room. I certainly do not want to smell dirty litter in any of those rooms. This litter box turned out to be perfect, you can't smell anything when the lid is on.

I think you have to stuff the cats in the litter box when you first get it so that they can learn how the door works, after a couple of days they just ignore the door and just jump right in and out. There's little filters on top so that air can get in and out and dry up the waste in the litter box so that you can have an easy time cleaning it. The lid pops right off for cleaning, but as someone mentioned earlier, the cat pee can get in the seam. There's a lip on the outside so that none of it can get out, but you just have to be careful with where you put the lid when you want to clean the box so that you don't get any on the floor.

Anyway, I'm kind of a clean freak when it comes to my litter box, especially since it's in the dining room. We had some guests spend a couple nights here and on the second day of their visit, they were asking where the litter box was because they didn't see one. You can't smell it, and only a very small amount of litter ends up outside, you can just use a hand vac right outside once every few days (or whenever you clean the box) to clean that up. Needless to say, our house guests were impressed.

Overall, I'm very satisfied. We can leave this in our dining room and have it not affect the way our home smells and the cats love it, and if you put it in the corner of the room people wouldn't even notice that there's a litter box in the room. It's large enough that my older cat can fit in there all the way and turn around to sniff then cover his waste; and also two cats can share it and I only have to clean it once every three days though your mileage may vary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly cheap solution for odor control., March 28, 2010
This review is from: Van Ness CP7 Enclosed Cat Pan/Litter Box, Extra Large (Misc.)
I was literally at my wits end trying to figure out what do do about my litter situation. I'd tried all kinds of different litters before I came to the realization that it might not be the litter so much as the cat box I was using. I love the filters in the top and the locking top! This box keeps litter out of my floor and odors out of my house. I use it in conjunction with Tidy Cats- Multiple Cats litter and I actually invited someone to sniff out the box today, haha. They were absolutely amazed that they couldn't detect even the faintest smell. You can't even smell the scent of the litter! I would highly recommend this box to anyone with a cat!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great litter box! Buying a 2nd one, July 6, 2010

This is probably the best litter box I have owned. I've had many different types of boxes in the past, including the expensive Litter Robot and other automatic cleaning boxes, as well as another one Amazon sells that looks like a big fake plant and always gets lots of compliments because no one can tell it's a litter box! The problem I have with that one is it is difficult to clean, cannot be carried easily from room to room without the top falling off, and my cats fling litter around on the floor. I still have that box but was needing to add a second box since I recently moved to a 2-story home. I am so glad I found this one. First, it is the perfect size for my cats. It is large but not so big it won't fit easily in a corner. I agree with other reviewers that it is not necessarily "Extra" large. I really love the shiny, smooth finish - not only is it pretty to look at and feels nice, it is easy to wipe clean. The top latches easily to the base and is very secure, easily moved when you need to. I was worried my cats would not adjust to having a flap-door but they had no issues at all. This is a HUGE help in preventing litter all over the floor! It also seriously cuts down on any litter box odor. It's amazing how an inexpensive box like this has made a task I *dreaded* become so much easier and I no longer can smell the box when I walk through the door. I'm buying another one and getting rid of my expensive "plant" lookalike!

This litter box does everything you would expect. It's easy to remove and replace the top. The hinges are strong enough that you can carry it by the handle even when it's full of litter. It contains any smells very well, and keeps litter from being scattered around it. The door hinges back and forth without any problems and can be removed and replaced easily.

The only minor issue I've had is that the bottom of the door is very close to the edge of the entrance, which doesn't leave much room for a liner. When I'm using a liner, the door gets snagged on it just a little bit. My cat hasn't had any problems getting in or out, however.

What prompted me to write this review was the excellent support I received from Van Ness. They're great!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good product at a good price, September 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Van Ness CP7 Enclosed Cat Pan/Litter Box, Extra Large (Misc.)
SUMMARY
We were looking for a litter box that was easy to clean and helped contain odors at a good price. This product works well and for the price would recommend it.

PROS
* Door is sized well to support larger cats (this was a big concern/consideration for us)
* Easy to open and close the litter box
* Comes with a cleanable filter to help control odor
* Container is smooth making it usually easy to clean

CONS
* Door easy falls off and as such we do not even use it
* Bottom is not square and not completely flat making it sometimes difficult to clean
* Where the bottom and top of the litter box meets a small gap remains. The cats sometimes urinate between it requiring more cleaning. In addition, it is possible for urine to escape between the gap.

After using this box, I discovered it has a design flaw. If you have a cat that likes to urinate standing up and points towards the back of the box, the urine leaks out along the back seam. When you take the lid off urine will be on both edges of the back of the bottom and top and a small amount can also leak out onto the floor. Other than that it's a great box, but you should make sure your kitty likes to sit, not stand before you buy this!
