Book Description

November 1, 2004
Rogier Van der Weyden emerged from scholarly and critical neglect only with the revival of interest in the so-called Flemish Primitives during the second half of the nineteenth century. The immensely forceful, frequently disturbing images which Van der Weyden produced owed as much to his supreme control of paint as they did to his observation of detail, which was never permitted to dominate the general rhythm and pattern of the picture itself. These qualities fused to create a style with a direct impact but one which was the result of only the most subtle and painstaking calculations of color and balance. Dr Campbell explores Van der Weyden s position both as official painter to the city of Brussels and within the international system of princely patronage which was evolving during his lifetime.

3.0 out of 5 stars mediocre, October 6, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Van Der Weyden (Hardcover)
This book is a cheap mass-market art book as can be seen in the price, and the production values reflect this. Although the paintings are reproduced in colour, the images are not sharp, and this is immediately obvious. As long as you are aware of this, the book is a reasonable purchase. That said, the paintings are breathtaking, and the choices are commendable. The text is also very readable, and while I am prepared to pay a lot more for a more comprehensive and better produced book on Van Der Weyden, there does not appear to be one on the market, so this was better than nothing. I'm awaiting a catalogue raisonne where everything is full page and in colour!

4.0 out of 5 stars Rogier and Me..., November 23, 2008
This review is from: Van Der Weyden (Hardcover)
... we go back a long way. First time I ever stumbled in the Prado Museum in Madrid, like, I'd been rousted from the Youth Hostel for the day and it was windy 'n freezing cold, so I thought I could stay out of trouble cheap and maybe get a little culture before hitting the tapas bars... So I waltz into the first sala on the left and wham, there's this Deposition from the Cross by Rogier Van der Weyden and I swear the colors and shapes sent me higher than Tim Leary's finest in the Hayes Bickford at Harvard Square....

Well, I may be confabulating my '60s youth again, but the Van der Weyden altarpiece in the Prado is one of my favorite paintings anywhere in the world, so compelling that sometimes when I'm in Madrid I just go and gaze at that piece for an hour or so, and find I can't concentrate on anything else in the museum. I'm also more or less hopelessly in love with Rogier's Magdalena in the Louvre, with the same mal-effect that I've never yet reached the Mona Lisa.

This isn't a great job of color reproduction, but the text is adequate and the price is modest. I've posted Rogier's Deposition as my amazon icon for a while, so I felt a need to 'witness' on his behalf.

Art books are expensive. This one is well worth the fifteen dollars. Plenty of informative text, and a good number of color reproductions. As someone wih a large collection of art books i recommend this book, especially for the price. It's fifteen dollars.... Can you find any other cheap books on Van der Weyden?
