Most Under-rated Album Ever,
By Trent Kelley (KS United States) - See all my reviews

I was so glad to find this on CD finally! And to read that there were others that had worn out their cassettes and have never forgotten the awesome mix of melody and rock of this solid album of one great song after another. Althought the song list doesn't list it, "2+2" is on this CD--one of it's best. I could go on and on about this CD. If you've stumbled across it by mistake and have never heard it, buy it.

Criminally overlooked,

I remember getting this LP in Holland back in the 80s and always listening to Midnight Sensation. One of the best opening tracks on an album ever. I'd dream about going to school in Jacksonville instead of Arnhem, The Netherlands! Later I also got a very crappy static-ridden cassette recording of their King Biscuit show off AFN. I'm glad these timewarp recordings are available on CD now!

Glad To Finally Have This One On CD,

In the summer of 1985, this then-little-known brother of the legendary Ronnie Van Zant broke this album on the scene of rock-and-roll fans and I, for one, loved it. For years, I looked for it to be released on CD, but to no avail. How thrilled I was to finally learn its available as my LP is well beyond its better years. Its well worth checking out for those who have not done so yet. My personal favorites are "She's Out With a Gun" and "You've Got To Believe in Love," but there are plenty of other cuts just as good. I highly recommend this one for any Van Zant fans.

It's about time..,

I had this album back when it first came out, (and still do) and also went thru at least 2 cassette tapes...Now I just want it on CD...I've noticed in all the reviews that nobody mentioned a thing about the song "Does A Fool Ever Learn".. That has to be one of the best songs on this album.. It actually tells a story about a girl that just can't come to grips with the fact that she always goes back to the same type of guy that beats her up all the time and screws her over all the time.. There's alot of females in this world that live the same exact type of life that the girl in the song does.. They just keep goin' back for more.... abuse... Maybe if they really listened to the words, it might just get to them enough, and help them realize that they don't have to live like that.. but.... Oh well... Like the song says,.. "Does a Fool Ever Learn??".. Sad, but true,..In most cases, nope, they never do...

I originally bought this record when I walked into the local record store in college and they were playing it right after it had been released. It was one of those moments where I just knew I would walk out of the store with that record.Van Zant was a Southern Rock band fronted by Johnny Van Zant, kid brother of the late Ronnie (Lynard Skynard) and Donnie (38 Special). They had put out some albums before this one, but I had not heard of them until this one. From what I understand, this one was a departure from the typical Southern sound to more of a pure Eighties AOR sound. And they did it very well. The only song I think I can recall hearing on the radio or MTV is "I'm A Fighter", which is easily the hardest-rocking tune on this CD. This is a CD of very enjoyable rock tunes with a fair amount of keyboards and lots of guitars, with a slight Southern tinge. It's not quite 38 Special, it's not Skynard, it's probably like a Southern Bon Jovi (I know that's an interesting comparison, but if you like the debut Bon Jovi CD, you'll probably like this too). All the tunes are mid-to-fast-tempo - no ballads, and they are quite consistent. The whole CD is excellent, and I'm glad to finally have it on CD.

VAN ZANT NAME IS STILL THE VOICE OF ROCK AND ROLL,
By A Customer
This review is from: Van Zant (Audio CD)
I FIRST BOUGHT THE CASSETTE IN 1985, I WORE OUT 2 COPIES OF THIS LEGENDARY RECORDING. MIDNITE SENSATION, I'M A FIGHTER, 2+2, ALL SOLID ROCK RECORDINGS. WHILE BON JOVI AND MOTLEY CRUE WERE TRYING TO SELL RECORDS BY THEIR LIVE "LIGHT SHOWS", NOT MUSICAL CONTENT, JOHNNY VAN ZANT WAS ROCKING US FROM THE HEART. 15 YEARS LATER, THIS HAS BEEN RELEASED ON CD FORMAT. AND IT STILL ROCKS TODAY. ANY TRUE MUSIC LOVER SHOULD CHECK THIS OUT. THERE IS NOT A BAD SONG ON IT. THANK YOU FOR RELEASING IT ON DISC. I HAVE BEEN WAITING TO HEAR IT IN THE CAR AGAIN!

Another great recording from the golden era,

Mid 80's brought us many splendid AOR and Melodic rock releases. There were so many good albums and super productions even some great releses went overnoticed. In those days when the sun shone better Johnny Van Zant came out with this album of pure AOR. All the heavenly guitar solos and supportive keyboard pieces are here. Add some great vocal from the J. Van Zant and what do you want more? The first track of the album "Midnite sensation" is an energetic 80s AOR piece and after the first notes you know you are on a winner.Fans of early Survivor Coneyhatch etc will find this release amusing. Jimi Jamison and Eddie Schwartz contribute this album with some good song writing.Actually this album is much better than his "Brickyard road" release which is also a fine album with more southern influence. If early/mid 80s AOR is your cup of tea then give this album a shot!

This is an AOR masterpiece. Songs like 2+2, Does A Fool Ever Learn & You've Got To Believe In Love make this stand out over time. Originally released in 1985, this cd still makes frequent stops in my cd player. But with Johnny Van Zant you know you can't go wrong.

A Jem,

When I first heard 2+2 on the radio, I was hooked. This is a jem. I love all the songs on this. I am so glad it is on CD. The song "Does a fool ever learn" can be found on Helix'es "No rest for the wicked", I wish Van Zant would have stayed together and made more music. Fans of Loverboy, Journey and 38 Special will enjoy this.
