This album by the child prodigy performer, Dr. Chitti Babu is comprised of Carnatic Music from South India. Babu is a master of the veena (vina), which is an Indian string instrument in the lute family. Babu is joined by six other veena players, keyboard, mridangam, ghatam, and morsing on the second track.

The first track is the Raga - Alapana of "Kharahara Priya." This raga for veena is 30 minutes long, and is very soothing. The drone strings produce high pitched harmonics that can sound like a ringing.
The second track is Thanam in Raga - Malika (Garland of Ragas). This second track (29 minutes) is made up of 4 different sections (a "garland"): 1) Raga - Natakuranji, 2) Valaji, 3) Kalyani, 4) Naga Gandhari. The mridangam is the higher pitched percussion instrument, and the ghatam is the airy, lower pitched percussion instrument, both South Indian. The Morsing is another secondary percussion string instrument played along with the mridangam in Carnatic concerts. Identical to the Jew's harp, it is an ancient instrument with a nasal, twangy sound. The addition of the keyboard sounds a little cheesy because of the sound effects they chose, but the percussion and additional veenas more than make up for it.

This is a good introduction to the Carnatic music of South India, and the popular instruments used there. Chitti Babu is a legendary performer, and this album is proof.
