Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The genus Vanda are small-flowered, tropical orchids found only in the Eastern hemisphere. The combination of species and hybrids of the genus Vanda with those of the genus Ascocentrum produces hybrids that are grouped into the artificial genus Ascocenda. Most of these plants bloom twice and sometimes three times a year. Best grown in a greenhouse, they can bloom anytime, and their flowers are long lasting. The book is divided into two parts, the first examining the history and evolution of Vanda and Ascocenda hybrids and the second providing a detailed reference manual for plant selection, environmental requirements, and culture. Not for beginners, but for the specialist the book is essential. George Cohen

5.0 out of 5 stars Vandas & Ascodendas & their Combinations with other Genera, November 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Vandas and Ascocendas and Their Combinations with Other Genera (Hardcover)
This book offers a concise description of all vandaceous orchids, with wonderful pictures, descriptions and differences between each genera. I am a grower of over thiry years, and have not realized that there were so many. I find this book to be more friendly to the average orchidist and if I could would give it a "10". This is truly the best on the market today.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Vanda resource, June 22, 2000
This review is from: Vandas and Ascocendas and Their Combinations with Other Genera (Hardcover)
This is a great book on the Vanda alliance. It has many wonderful pictures of both species and hybrids. It even includes a bunch of botanical prints (artistical renditions) of a number of species. This book is great for the hobbiest or breeder. Many pages go into detail about the history of breeding Vandas, and what qualities certain species impart. I have used this section a number of times when creating new hybrids. I have also used to book to identify an unkown Vanda, what a relief!

This review is from: Vandas and Ascocendas and Their Combinations with Other Genera (Hardcover)
This is a tremendous book for all Vanda enthusiasts and there is a wealth of knowledge included for those who are also interested in their inter-generic hybrids. The author provides information on how to grow Vandas (species and hybrids) successfully and covers what to look for when buying seedlings along with general plant care. He also writes about the origin of Vandas and discusses what judges look for.

The colour photography is stunning and clear and while the photographs are placed together in two sections within the book, they are referenced throughout the commentary and easy to locate.

What else can I say except that I believe this book is an excellent reference book and will appeal to growers at all levels whether experienced or novice.

A word of caution though, I have found only the Hardcover edition has full colour photography so if purchasing a paperback edition, it may be advisable to check this out first - if colour is important to you.
