Adrian Vandenberg's first solo record . . .,

. . . and still his best one (although the other two were really good also).
"The Flying Dutchman" (he stands 6'5" tall!) is a great guitarist. He had a solid trio of musicians backing him up. The best songs on here are "Your Love Is In Vain", "Burning Heart", and "Nothing To Lose". There is a power ballad here ("Burning Heart" - not as good as the ballads on his next two albums), but the rest of this is your early 80's hard rock. There is not really any "speed metal" on this release, but there are three fairly uptempo songs here ("Ready For You", "Too Late", and "Out In The Streets"). Most of them feature acoustic and electric guitars in the same song. This is one of the first hard rock releases I remember hearing that. It's a unique combination that worked well here. Adrian Vandenberg has a great flair for the genre, and he produced a very unique style of hard rock that holds up well, even after more than 20 years from its release. Why these guys were never huge in the USA is a mystery to me. But you're missing out on some great music if you overlook them. And be sure to listen to Vandenberg's other two CD's - Heading For A Storm and Alibi - I think the latter probably showcases Adrian's guitar skills the best.

This CD is a definite "must have collectible" for anyone who wants to listen to a CD from beginning to end, without having to skip over any songs, unike most of today's music artists CD's. This CD contains a wide array of music styles that are both timeless & classic. Songs included in this CD are acoustical tracks like "Burning Heart" plus heavy double bass drum pieces like "Lost in the City" which is a song that most people can relate to.It took me awhile to locate this CD simply because it gets reprinted only once every so often, so order yours today before its taken off of the market again.

GREAT DEBUT,

I purchased this on vinyl when it first came out and it became an instant favorite and remains so. I was also fortunate enough to see the band sometime after that. Call it hair metal or whatever you want, I choose to simply call it very good music. No, they didn't create anything new with this release but who cares, how many bands REALLY do? I love the songs and I love the musicianship, everything else is moot. I have no problem recommending this to any fan of good hard rock.

My bad rating isn't for the music , which rocks - it's for the piss poor mastering ! This sounds WORSE than my old CD's - if you buy this get it for the great music but DON'T buy to get a disc that sounds better than your old ones .

Very good debut,

This CD features one of Vandenberg's best-known tunes, "Burning Heart". Compared to other Vandenberg offerings, this album seems to feature slower tunes and somewhat darker production than the two follow-up discs, "Heading For a Storm" and "Alibi". Both "Heading..." and "Alibi" sound like they featured bigger budgets but that doesn't mean that the debut is lo-fi.I can remember an old Guitar Player review of this disc that mentioned that Adrian's acoutic guitar playing was perhaps even better than his electric style. Indeed, this disc features more acoustic guitars than later CD's. As for his electric playing, Adrian's style features a lot of classical/European influences and I think you can hear some Michael Schenker in him also. Interestingly, even though Adrian and Eddie Van Halen are both Dutch, I don't hear much overlap in style between them. This is very good album, especially for fans of more melodic hard rock. "Burning Heart" makes this album worth picking up.

Dutch hard rock at its best...,
By Alanna Evans (US) - See all my reviews

That describes Vandenberg to a 't'. Lead by the young guitar wizard Adrian Vandenberg, this record mimicks the personality put into his axeslinging... quirky and pure fun. Rollicking rockers like "Your Love is in Vain" and the whirlwind "Nothing to Lose" are classics in any time period, while the gorgeous sorrow dripped ballad, "Burning Heart" is timeless. Memorable and solid hard rock from one of the true masters of the axe, who's talent was sadly lost in the shuffles with Whitesnake after disbanding his band. Those that love other Dutch rockers like Vengeance and Helloise will be delighted with this early 80s slice of pure hard rock mastery.

This is Vandenberg's self-titled debut album that was released in 1982. It has got nine tracks that are in a straight-ahead hard rock musical direction. One of these cuts--"Burning Heart"--is a power ballad. The album's songwriting, musicianship, and sound quality are solid. Bert Heerink is a good, spirited, smooth-sounding vocalist. Jos Zoomer's drumming sounds nice in the mix, too. Adrian Vandenberg does not disappoint in the guitar playing department, either. The songs that I consider to be favorites are "Your Love Is in Vain," "Wait," and "Burning Heart." Heerink pulls off a solid singing performance on the fun "Your Love Is in Vain." The engaging, well-written "Wait" is a slow burner that is characterized by a taut, pleasing guitar riff from Vandenberg and a remarkable chorus. "Burning Heart" is an unforgettable gem of a composition with its beginning which consists solely of Vandenberg's indelible guitar work. Heerink's vocals are also memorable and arresting along with the song's refrain. The CD insert includes a color photo of the band and the lyrics to the songs. The CD is just over 37 minutes. This is a recommendable piece of work.

Probably one of the best cd's to come out in the whole 80s decade. Great guitar work from a young Adrien Vandenberg along with some great tunes. Brings back great memories, but i must say it still sound fresh! Thank god for Wonded Bird for making this available again. Very strong cd that has stood the test of time. A must have!!!!

Now this is a real rock-roll band! Adrian Vandenburg, and the rest of the crew rock! Too bad bands of the 90's can't play like this. If you like the sound of a raging guitar, best be buying it, you"ll like it!!
