Bangin' mix from one of the great DJ-producers, October 13, 2004
This review is from: Vandit: Sessions 3 - Mixed By Paul Van Dyk (Audio CD)
This one is superb. And it came in under the radar, something puzzling to me because anything new from Paul Van Dyk ought to be getting first-class marketing treatment from CD distributors. "Vandit: Sessions 3" is the kind of mix that leaves those money-grabbing quickie jobs in the dust, delivering a track selection that includes amazing new material along with a few familiar (but not overplayed!) tracks. Here you'll find Paul's own "Crush" as well as two selections from Nu NRG, emerging artists that he has signed to his Vandit label for good reason. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Paul's set flows like a night out at a favorite club - at first easy-going, luring you in, then gradually building to a delirious frenzy. There is absolutely no cheese filling and not a single throwaway track. By the time you're a third of the way in, you realize you're in the hands of a master.
It almost goes without saying that Paul's mixing is superb, and as the set reaches its peak the transitions between tracks become almost undetectable. He really knows how to sequence the music in such a way that it never busts you out of the groove.
If you're a fan of upfront, banging melodic trance, this CD is a must.

Superb uplifting/melodic trance, Ibiza style, March 15, 2005

Superb uplifting/melodic trance, Ibiza style
I'm going to ignore the negative reviews for this CD (which fortunately are in the minority), as they seemed to suggest this compilation is a bit of a commercial sellout by van Dyk. However, this is not the case. READ THE TITLE. The IBIZA session. IBIZA. Of course you can expect some more mainstream tracks (e.g. track 4 "Holding on to Nothing"), although PVD does keep the set nicely balanced.
Note that if your not a big fan of vocals or mainstream (as i know some aren't) you should check out "Holding on to Nothing" in particualar ("Crush" as well) before buying. (or you can just program them out or skip them if you don't like but that ruins the whole idea of it being a mixed CD).
About the set, PVD has gone for the beach-rave style (as the cover suggests), starting off with a couple of nice grooves to get you into it before unleashing a series of uplifting melodic trance numbers (starting with his own "Crush") that get the dance floor moving (peaking at "Floor Control"), and not letting up until the dreamy track 7 "Freefall", leading into the climax of the mix "No More Rain", which GOES OFF. Aalto's "Rush" is next (a personal fav of mine) and keeps the peak going then breaks down, and then peaks again!
Then its the darker "Saturday" by Techno-punk, which is one of the tracks I'm not sure about; it seems a bit out of place in the mix (and is a bit repetitive at 6mins) though I'm sure some ppl love it. It's followed by another hard hitter "Universe" which is another fav of mine and will really get your rave going!
The mix starts to calm down at track 12 with the dreamy (but still very dancable) "The Eternal" which is followed by the chilled out "Infernal Machine". PVD then decides to end the mix on a high and drops another Techno-Punk track "Enegize", which is the perfect anthem to go out on (and really kick off the dance floor!).
Overall a VERY good mix (i have slight problems with "Saturday" and "Infernal Machine", the former as previously mentioned and the latter as it is seems out of place and effects the flow of the mix, but only minor probs) displaying new German talent in the production industry, and an excellent addition to your dance/trance collection.
It's also a superb party disc as it never seems to let the dancefloor down, but you can chill to it as well if your not in the mood to get body movin' (as with most good trance). Definately worth buying.
A note on the mixing (which seems to be a bit of a controversy). The cover states "Compiled by Paul van Dyk", while the jacket says "Compiled and Mixed by PVD and Jay Burnett". Whether this means that PVD compiled it and Jay Burnett mixed it or they shared the mixing I don't know but it is mixed nonetheless, and beatwise mixed quite perfectly (although not as SEAMLESS as one could expect from a high profile DJ, listen to Sasha and you'll know what i mean).
