Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The latest Peter Shandy adventure is the ultimate in escapism: an utterly hilarious albeit totally unbelievable caper that MacLeod ( The Corpse in Oozak's Pond ) fans will savor. Helen Shandy, a librarian in Balaclava County, Mass., and wife of Peter, a professor of agriculture at the local college, is busy roaming the countryside photographing antique weather vanes created by Praxiteles Lumpkin for a pamphlet to be issued by the area's historical society. She discovers, however, that many of the treasures are being stolen by a gang of thieves. After the culprits burn down the local soap factory, which was once topped by a Lumpkin vane, Helen decides to travel to Sasquamahoc, Maine, the site of another priceless Praxiteles, before a calamity befalls it. While in Maine, Helen and two women friends decide to go whale-watching, but the excursion becomes a nightmare when the vane snatchers take over the ship. Eventually, Helen and Peter piece together enough clues to uncover the thieves' ringleader and save the Lumpkins. Another solid performance from MacLeod and the Shandys.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Most Wonderful Pursuit, May 9, 2000
This review is from: Vane Pursuit (A Peter Shandy Mystery) (Mass Market Paperback)
Vane Pursuit is in fact neither vain nor without merit for the reader. This is entertainment in the best sense of the word. It's a book from the Balaclava series of Macleod and you should read the preceding volumes, but don't have to. Several known and already loved characters are once more trapped in bizarre and surrealistic doings of just as bizarre new persons. Peter Shandy's friends of his past are in the center of one plotline, the acquaintances of Helen Shandy - namely Iduna Stott, who gets more and more whalelike...in the other. How they merge finally ist Macleods art and unique skill. And wait! Another woman appears in this book, who figures prominently in "An Owl too many" - Miss Binks. I can't tell you, how she emerges, it would be a spoiler. But believe me: you will read this book again and again, just because it works that way.. The different settings picture truly antagonistic persons in environments that seem to fit both parts. Needless to say, that the "good ones" are better adjusted, perceive the wrongdoings of the "bad ones" in due time und thus create the wonderful happy end, this time without wedding bells but with a blossoming romance hinted. Well, I enjoyed the exaggerated parts hugely. If you didn't in the books preceding this one, you might really feel, that Macleod took several things too far. To the faithful followers of the author (of whom I am one) this is one of her best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than I remembered!, November 1, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Vane Pursuit (A Peter Shandy Mystery) (Mass Market Paperback)
I first read this book many years ago courtesy of the public library. I fell in love with the works of Charlotte MacLeod, and so I was delighted when I found out Amazon had the book used, in good condition, for such a reasonable price! If you haven't read the series before, get thee to a library and give it a try! Re-reading Vane Pursuit is like a visit from an old friend, with the addition that I now "get" many more of the little literary jokes and references sprinkled through the text. Book was in condition described, slightly worn and yellowed but no marks on inside pages and apparently comes from a smoke-free place. Would I buy again? In a heartbeat!
