5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic scope!, February 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Basically this is a overall awesome scope! Comes with a sturdy carry case that is lockable and foam padding to protect the scope. Tripod is well made, textured matte finish. The scope length is small compared to others with the same power which is what I wanted. It fits perfectly into my backpack and doesn't take up precious space. Super light, matte finish, metal construction and very easy to zoom and focus. The image quality is superb for the price. During the daytime I can look at squirrels at 15x from 10 feet away or deer at 60x about 200 feet away and see idividual hairs on the animals. At night I can read car names/labels/stickers with ease from a far distance, like 250 ft.?! I have used this scope in the temps in the single digits and in the fifties and neither time did it fog up.
Like any scope reguardless of what you pay, the higher zoom level the more bouncing around you see if you hold it by hand. Therefore I will be buying a monopod with a tripod base plate for better viewing when I hike in the woods. I dont think anyone wants to lay down in the prone position to look at something everytime. Only complaint I have is so minor but I'll write it so everyone knows, the protecting cap for the 60mm lens comes off to easy when removing it from my backpack, causing me to search in my bag for it everytime I pull it out. Again, not a major issue. As for the zoom and focusing, there is no play in the focus or zoom so when you stop rotating it it hold that exact position!
If your like me and want a scope thats smaller in length, high power, light, well build and affordable then buy this scope!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super nice spotting scope!, November 30, 2011

I have the High Plains model 561 (15~45x60) and I paid $140 (free shipping) which is an incredible deal. Right out of the box, you sense the quality. And in use, it does not disappoint. The zoom and focus adjustments are silky smooth; the finish is perfect; the optics are amazing (especially considering the price); the table-top tripod is solid; even the carry case is rock solid. The BaK4 Porro prism is a huge plus.

I'm using it primarily for spotting targets at the shooting range 50 to 200 yards, mostly around 100 yards. It's perfect - I love it. Go to Vanguard's website to see photos and specs on all the models so you get the right one for you. I tried several other popular brands but in this price range, I don't think the Vanguard can be beat.
