I was looking for a tripod to go with my first new DSLR D7000. Vanguard tripods have some pretty good reviews, so I picked this up when I Amazon offered 20% discount. It's probably an overkill for this camera but the tripod is beautiful (even has pattern on the legs). Functionally, it's very complete, even came with carry bag and stone bag. I only wish it has a strap to tie the legs when folded, but I'll make one, just to make it easier to carry as putting it in and out of the bag is not very practical. While it has almost all the functions of the more expansive fiber tripod that costs double or triple the price, it is a bit stiff and not as easier to work with. This is the only reason it gets a 4 stars instead of 5. I'll update if the joints gets smooths out after some use, together with the durability, then it will deserve the extra star!

Update: After 2 weeks of use, it has loosen up a bit but still quite stiff. I was in a camera shop the other day and check out the Gitzo while waiting. The Gitzo is definitely more refine and feel lighter (without the ball head). I noticed that the center column of Gitzo is also made of fiber carbon vs the Vanguard is aluminum. The Gitzo is no doubt a better tripod but at double the cost. So all in all, this is still a good alternative for non-professional such as my self. The rating stays, hopefully, the joints and twists will loosen up after more use, that will make it more close to Gitzo.

Not only is the tripod light weight being constructed of carbon fiber, it is extremely strong and stable. The MACC( Multi angle central column) feature is a especially useful for macro shots low to the ground. The Amazon price was about $100 less than other places that I shopped.

I already own a Manfrotto travel tripod but wanted something more substantial for my Nikon D90 when I used my long zoom or 400mm lenses as the former can be a bit unsteady. Although pricy I decided to go for a carbon fiber tripod because of the sturdiness and lighter weight; two things necessary for landscape photography when hiking and climbing.
Manfrotto, Gitzo, and others set the standard for tripods and I was prepared to buy one of them when I came upon the Vanguard line. I was intrigued by all of the features of the Alta Pro 283CT, especially the center column which easily switches to any angle - even completely upside down. With the legs spread out all the way and the camera upside down I can actually shoot from ground level without having to lay down on the ground or having to place my camera on the ground...Nice!
The four-section legs lock and unlock quickly and easily needing only a ¼ turn and the retractable spikes on the end are useful on soft surfaces.
The 283CT comes without a head which gives you the freedom of adding a ball or pan head of your choice. Many tripods come with a ball head included. Since I prefer a pan head I welcomed the opportunity to use the head of my choice.
All in all I liked everything about it - sturdy, full featured, well-constructed, and it came with a travel bag and stone bag included. The only negative I could find is the attractive travel bag holds the tripod nicely without a head but is not long (or wide) enough to use when a head is attached rendering it useless. That's why 4 stars instead of 5. It seems that it could be modified to allow for a head.
Vanguard may be a young company but the 283CT competes formidably with the "big guys." I wholeheartedly recommend it.

The several months worth of research I went through before I purchased this tripod was extremely worthwhile to say the least. With the myriad of product out there, I wanted to make sure I got the tripod the suited my needs the best. I'm a landscape photographer, and wanted one that fit me - literally. I'm 6' and was tired of bending over to see through my camera with my old tripod. This one will tower over me if I need it to.. There's not a position that this tripod wont adjust to - a dream for macro shooters! Secondly, I wanted one that was sturdy - 2nd requirement met with flying colors! Nothing will tip this over, and have never had need to use the hook attached to use weight to stabelize the tripod - it's extremely sturdy. Third, I wanted something lightweight to carry over miles of hiking to get to that beautiful scenery... Here's where I have to give it a 4 star rating. I just "Assumed" that Carbon Fiber would be feather light - it's not heavy by any means, but my smaller aluminum was lighter.. That small difference doesn't distract from my 5 star rating at all - if you want a tall, sturdy, lightweight tripod that will last you for many years, stop looking, and get this one. I paired it with a pistol grip head, but that's another review - (btw, I love it also!)..

I will be posting a video review to clarify any confusion in this review.
My first impressions of this tripod was that it would be lighter, stronger and more stable than my previous one: ( Dynex 65" Professional Tripod - DX-MW010 )
So I ran out and bought this tripod, after seeing it briefly in a camera shop.
They offered an aluminum version there of the same tripod, but no, I had to go with the carbon fiber, because hey, it has to be lighter and better right? I mean after all, the tripod costs 299.99$ and the my Dynex DX-MW010 was only 99$, and is made of the same aluminum ( 60/61 aircraft aluminum alloy ) as the other version of the Vanguard Alta Pro.
I was excited to get it out of the box and try it, my old tripod head had been broken for over a year and I needed a new one.
I wound up buying a basic Vanguard SBH-250 head for 99$ at the same time of the Alta Pro Carbon here.
I loved the idea of the tilt neck on this tripod, and it also has a built in swivel as well, witch is nice.

I have been a portrait photographer for many years, and have a lot of my grandfather's "Sometimes less is more" in me, but this time it is true.

The carbon fiber makes its legs unstable in the full height position, they wobble left and right in a twisting motion, and if you are doing bulb shots, this is a f***ing nightmare.
My Dynex legs do not wobble at all. (the head I bought fits both tripods, though curiously needs an adapter grommet to fit the Vanguard so I was able to try them both with several cameras and lens combinations.)
Now, I have had my Dynex for about 12 years now, I bought it as a "cheap bang around tripod" for 99.99$ at best buy.
