Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT Aluminum Tripod with SBH-100 Ball Head

I do a lot of outdoor photography -- probably more than most (EF5 tornados, lightning, constellations, landscapes and macro photography -- like bees, butterflies and the eyes of dragonflies). I need a tripod that can handle a variety of conditions, and situations, I often encounter like: high winds, extreme rain, large hail, sweltering heat, freezing cold etc.

I currently use a couple of Benro tripods ( Benro A0570F Tripod and Tenba 15-inch Black Messenger Bag Bundle and a Benro travel Tripod ) which are adequate for most of my needs -- except, I have discovered, they are extremely light weight (although they do very well with most of my smaller lenses mounted to my camera). I don't trust them with my Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L lens or in high winds. If ya know what I mean. And, they don't have a lot of bells and whistles.

Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT Aluminum Tripod with SBH-100 Ball Head is an impressive piece of technology, right out of the box. A bit weightier than what I am used to, but nothing I can't get used to. Inside the box is an Aluminum alloy tripod and Magnesium alloy canopy, High Performance SBH-100 ballhead, quality tripod bag with shoulder strap and stone bag for weighting down the tripod (when situations call for it) -- all in one of my favorite non-colors, black.

A few of the things, right off the bat, abut the Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT Aluminum Tripod:

* thick black metal legs with cushioned uppers for easy gripping/positioning.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I have been an amateur landscape photographer for many years and I always thought a tripod should not be worth more than $100 - about the amount I spent on my last one before this one. I received this Vanguard professional tripod free for reviewing from Amazon and I must say - this is an entire different class than what I am used to. The ball makes all the difference. Of course, one has to get familiar with some of the tightening knobs, but in the end, it is by far the best tripod I've ever seen.

Just last weekend I went to some waterfalls in Tennessee and even when the surface was very uneven, it did not make a difference with this tripod! All I had to adjust was the position of the ball head. It is like working with 3D controls rather than 2D at one time with my old tripod. I was able to adjust angles and position much faster than otherwise. The legs are sturdy - I placed this tripod in running water for some of the half-second RAW shots of the falling water, and the results are fabulous. I did not think this tripod is heavy - at least compared to some others I used - and it was easy to carry it around in its bag.

UPDATE - 7/10/13. The tripod comes with 2 hotshoe connectors. If you lose one, Amazon and Amazon sellers have replacements available - for as low as $14 for QS-39 Vanguard.

Considering the price I am very satisfied with this purchase. The Ball head is especially nice I can clamp it down and my Canon 7d does not move. The legs were just OK as they have a little flex in them and I suspect this flex might be a problem if the stone bag was filled. The tilting center post is pretty cool but there is a tad bit of wobble in it. Since I use a timer or remote to release the shutter the wobble is not that important.
Update:
I'm glad to report that the bit of wobble in the center post is easily fixed by the included allen wrench.

People are recommending carbon fibre tripods because they're lighter than aluminum ones. I find the weight of this Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT Aluminum Tripod with SBH-100 Ball Head acceptable. This is my first tripod. I use it indoors on still life. I bought it over others because the center column, when tilted to 0 degrees, can help place the tripod body farther away from the subject. When the tripod is splayed low, this can be a real benefit. And, I have found its ability to go low makes it easier to get upshots of flowers, etc in tight scenes. I use a light point-and-shoot, and a tripod helps prevent blurry pictures in low light and long exposure shots. The ball head is excellent. It has two built-in spirit levels. I can position the camera at any angle I want, but sometimes I have to spend a minute or two fiddling with it, because the plate tilts down only from 90 to 0 degrees on one side of the chamber. If it tilted both ways (90 to 0, and 90 to 180 degrees), that would make it easier to use. I believe Vanguard does make such a model. Note, just be careful when closing the legs inward, if you get your thumb in the way, it can really hurt! Bought on 2013-05-09, reviewed 2013-06-27 -YK.

It is my first tripod and I'm glad I bought it. It feels Rock Solid to use, I'm quite surprise how sturdy this thing is!

I have a Nikon D7000 and Nikon SB910 Flash, yeah not that heavy setup but even if you use those huge lenses, I'm sure this thing is not moving an inch and goin' anywhere. Yes, its a a little heavy compared to carbon fiber's out there with the head but not that heavy to carry it around town. Who cares about those 2 to 3 extra pounds on your back if you have a little monster ready to give you those perfect shots.

Most of my friends have Manfrotto Tripods with them but after seeing this, their jaw dropped and said "I should have bought this instead", I'm telling you comparing them side by side with Manfrotto 055XPROB in particular, this tripod feels more sturdy and looks very good too. Not to mention all those specification and angles and different things it can do with the head included, sorry I will not go with all the features I'm not good at that.

All in all, you will not go wrong with Alta Pro, I highly recommend it. Like they say, you will not get that TIPA Award for nothing.

Don't think too much, just buy it! :-)
