Size: Auctus Plus 323CT Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The 323CT tripod from Vanguard is a well constructed, heavy duty tripod intended for studio or field use. It should be noted that this is a "headless" tripod, meaning you must equip the tripod with a conventional 3-axis or ball-head prior to use.

The 323CT is constructed of metal and carbon fiber, the carbon fiber use restricted to the legs. The use of carbon fiber makes the tripod strong for its weight, but this is not a tripod you'll be carrying on mountain expeditions. The tripod, without head, weighs a touch over 8 pounds, although it does fold up to a reasonable 28".

All the controls on the tripod are smooth working, particularly the central column elevation crank. The crank actually folds up within a larger wheel and the wheel can be used for minute adjustments. The mechanical advantage is large, which permits for easy and precise movements. This is one of the better central column elevation mechanisms I've ever used.

I have used this tripod with everything from 4X5 view cameras to Hasselblads (medium format) and down to 35mm. It functioned very well in all cases. It's easy to set up and easy to break down. I've used it in the studio and also in the field; it's probably my #1 choice for a field tripod as long as the shot is not too far from the car.

Some of my favorite features of the tripod, in addition to the ultra-smooth center column mechanism, are the large and clearly marked extension markings on the carbon fiber legs (makes it easy to extend each leg equally) and the large feet that significantly increase stability on dirt, sand, tall vegetation, etc. These large feet unscrew to reveal spikes, but I've never found them necessary -- the large feet really do the job.

Bearing in mind that this is not a lightweight backpack tripod, I can recommend this tripod without reservation.

The Vanguard Auctus Plus 323CT Professional Tripod for Cameras and Camcorders is even better than I was anticipating and now I must purchase a new tripod head to get the most out of this high quality photographic instrument. To maintain a stable and secure foundation for a camera, this is outstanding -- attractive, easy to assemble, sturdy, and versatile. It arrives in a very nice cardboard box with a handle, so if you're inclined to store it in the box, you have that option. Also included is a black and orange carrying case with a shoulder strap and there is a little zippered compartment near the top of the bag for the hook, included hex key, car key, flash drive, roll of film or whatever you'd like to store. A hand crank raises and lowers the center column and it moves very smoothly, not too easy and not too hard. The tripod can simply be converted for macro shots with low camera placement. For low angle photography using very wide legs, the bottom half of the center column can very easily be removed by simply unscrewing the hook and turning the bottom ring. Very smart and pretty fast, too. Having the option to attach anti slip spiked rubber feet is a great advantage in snow or sand and adds to the stability of the tripod. When the tripod arrives, the large rubber feet are snugly attached and I doubt that they will be lost when removed to use the spikes or standard rubber feet. The three sectioned legs are extremely easy to extend with a slight turn of the amply sized twist locks and each leg has clearly marked segments for perfect measuring. They can be locked at the top, another stability and security advantage, at three angles (25, 50 and 80 degrees). If desired, a camera bag or weight can be hung from the hook on the center column.Read more ›

Size: Auctus Plus 323CT Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This is not a tripod that you would grab to take with you on the family vacation. It is hefty, and I would not recommend this for travel unless you need to take a picture on a hillside or super rough terrain because it just to heavy to carry a long way. The hockey puck size leg grips work great, no more lack of grip. The spikes did their job, held the camera steady when low and on carpet. I did notice when I was testing the spikes on the carpet, if you adjust the leg angle to the steepest the spikes no longer dig in, for the center column hits the floor providing the support. With the legs as high up as they extend and my canon T2i with a 18-135mm lens, the tripod seemed sturdy. However, when I would push against the legs they would move in. It didn't fall down but it did move, something I wish it wouldn't do. At the time of the review I did not have a head so I do not know how it would perform with a pan or tilt. With a max wight load of 39 LB I don't think you could ever max that out. One feature it was lacking was a way to just adjust the head for levelness unless you purchased a head with a bubble level. If you're looking for a tripod for studio shooting that will need to hold a lot of weight look no further. But if you're like me who does a lot of outside shooting, I prefer using something that is quicker to set up, lighter and easier to adjust.

I received this product free of charge to try through the vine program.

I agree with the reviewers that the features are great. However, cheaper products in this line include the ball head. So it seems overpriced. If you need the specialty feet, the option to add a weight to the center, or want to attach the camera upside down then the cost is not a factor. If you don't have a need for these extras, then you should look at other tripods. I showed the unit to some high-end amateurs and these were part of their comments. They also showed me an aluminum tripod that was almost identical in weight. So if the extra cost relates to the carbon fiber then it may not be necessary. I'm guessing that this unit is intended for the professionals and the extra $100-$200 to have the features, quality, and ruggedness is not even a consideration.

There was only a large screw sticking out of the top of the tripod. It was too large for any of my cameras or camcorders to attach to. Had I read the manual (but who reads manuals these days) I would have discovered that the screw was reversible. It had a smaller screw head on the other end that did fit my cameras and camcorders. I only discovered this when I went to Vanguard's web site and watched a video that explains the features of the Vanguard Auctus Plus 323CT Tripod.
