Everything seems well made, though I can't speak for the long term durability just yet.
R. Padilla
I liked the tripod design. but it is really rated for a smaller camera, a micro-four-thirds or very small DSLR and with light, short lenses.
John Stritzinger
It comes with a nice weatherproof carrying case and a strap that you can sling over your shoulder.

Check my reviews and you'll see I'm more often critical than full of praise. There's a reason for that: most stuff sucks. Manufacturers care less about what you think after you have the product than before you get it.

I'm a big Bogen/Manfrotto user. Have been for years. Owned and own several monopods and tripods from them, plus heads and what-have-you. So for me, getting the Vanguard was an exercise in faith. I wanted a lightweight, small tripod for keeping in the car. I wanted something that was always there - just in case.

The Vanguard more than meets expectations. Yes, the legs are a bit flimsy for heavy lenses and wind - but those weren't part of what I was planning for. For occasional use or for use every day with a 4/3 or even a small dslr with a kit lens, you cannot go wrong with this tripod. Fits into it's own case which is about 18" long - a huge plus from carrying my 3020 everywhere. Lightweight. Oh! And the center shaft pivot! That was unexpected and SO cool! My better half makes jewelry and we like to use a macro for getting the pieces up on the web. The pivoting center shaft makes that a snap!

Really, for the everyday photog who isn't taking a 500mm with a D4 up to take NatGeo shots of bald eagles, this is a terrific choice for a tripod. And for the normal use - taking family shots, steadying the LX5 or T3i for those critical prom shots, you don't need more. Taking a tripod along for some walking trip where you just might need it? PERFECT!

It's been in my car since I bought it, except for the times we've done macro. I anticipate using this baby for a long time. To be fair, I do wish the head was compatible with my RC2 plates, but it comes with its own plate, so I can live without that.

A really nice addition to my camera support stuff.

I tried this to use as a travel tripod. My regular tripod is a Vanguard Alta Pro 283CT which I really like, so being partial to Vanguard product, this Nivelo looked appealing.

It is just too flimsy and shaky, easily subject to vibrations from floor or breeze, with a Canon 7D and any kind of lens. I tried with a 70-200mm f/4L and a smaller 10-22mm wide angle. The Nivelo could not remain stable with either lens if there were a breezed, and tripod was fully extended or all but last section.

I liked the tripod design. but it is really rated for a smaller camera, a micro-four-thirds or very small DSLR and with light, short lenses. I would not use this on a landscape shoot.

So, I returned this and bought a Benro A2690T Travel Angel instead and love that tripod.

It is so easy to set up and rake down. Highly recommended by camera magazine (was not rated number one but came in second. Prices lower then the tested price. Compact and will travel well because it is light and sturdy enough for my needs on the road. Not so stable in high winds.

Is this the tripod you want to use when you're at your studio or home? No, but it's a great travel tripod for carrying around slung over your back while walking the streets or packed in your unchecked luggage sitting in the overhead bins.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The VANGUARD Nivelo 245BK Tripod has versatility that will allow you to take macro shots for extremely close objects or take photographs at unique angles. The leg-locking system uses a twisting motion to lock the legs in place instead of a lever which is very common. While the twisting motion is easy to use you do not have any sort of a visual indicator that the leg is locked in place. If you forget to lock all the legs or each section of a leg your tripod can become unstable causing your camera to fall. This can result in a costly mishap. Construction seems relatively strong. The camera mount is capable of swiveling which is beneficial for photographing action photos. One aspect of this tripod that I like is that it is compact and portable. The user manual that comes with the tripod is more of a picture manual that provides very little instruction. Not really a big deal as you will just need some time with the tripod to figure out how it functions.

I have mixed feelings with this tripod based on: 1) the locking system of the legs which is just too easy to fail to lock a leg correctly resulting in catastrophic damage to the camera and 2) the price point which is a bit high. If you are sure to take the time to lock the legs and work in a slow and deliberate manner this tripod will work fine. I would say it is be suited for taking still photographs in a controlled indoor environment.

UPDATE: December 27, 2012

I have now had the opportunity to use this tripod much more extenively and my initial impression has changed for the positive. The locking system on the legs actually works well and is better than I anticipated. You still need to make sure that the legs are adequately locked in place but once they are I believe it will not come undone. Therefore, I am changing my rating from 3 stars to 4 stars. Solid tripod that works well.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This is a very unique tripod that's good for certain types of photography. The unique construction allows you to take macro shots or shoot at unique angles. It's very lightweight, making it a great run-and-gun tripod. As you'd expect with such a light tripod, you won't be able to see heavy lenses and it's a poor choice for outdoor shoots where wind is an issue. It's also not the best choice for studio use; you're better off with something heavier and cheaper.

For video, this tripod is limited by its head. The included head is just much better for photography and doesn't have the quick versatility needed for video.

The construction is very good. Once you learn the leg-locking system, you'll find it faster than traditional clamp systems. Everything seems well made, though I can't speak for the long term durability just yet.

For run-and-gun shoots, macro photography on the road, and general traveling, this is a very good tripod. It's well made, offers unique angles, and is very light. For video, studio, and rugged outdoor use there are better choices.
