To turn on new listeners or as an all-encompassing observation as to why so many of us love the blues this one is just about as successful as they come. Often little thought or care is applied to all encircling projects such as this from Vanguard. Not here! It helps however to have such a list of artists from which to choose. Dedicated to a particular style, the three discs open with folk blues, delta and country blues, and lastly urban blues. The second two discs are crammed with scorching performances from the giants of the field, people such as John Lee Hooker, Skip Jones, Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Lightnin' Hopkins and Gary Davis. Making surprise appearances on the opening are Buffy Sainte-Marie and Bill Monroe, alongside blues artists, Mance Lipscomb, John Hammond and Josh White. The blues don't get much better than this!
