I bought both the Skyborne 49 and the Tamrac 3385 Aero Speed Pack 85 Dual Access Photo/Laptop Backpack (Black) because at the cost of these bags, I wanted to make sure I got the right one.

I don't really like how Amazon combined all the Vanguard bags under this one page. All the reviews are mixed together and the pictures of the product are not easy to distinguish.

There's no doubt that this is a high quality bag. Good materials and I like the look.

I'm giving the bag 3 stars because I don't think it is that great of a design with all the clips that are not removable.

For my money, there are better options available at this price point.

Hope this helps-

Size: Skyborne 53 Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
These days traveling can be a bear and no one wants to lug a laptop case and a camera bag through the airport. (You'll spill your coffee and drop your Cinnabun.) Which is no doubt why Vanguard whipped up the Skyborne 53. It fits up to a 17-inch laptop (I tried it with my MacPro) and as much camera gear as most people who aren't planning on hiring a sherpa, are likely to carry.

LAPTOP notes:::
--The laptop will sit next to your back when everything is put together. It's compartment is cushioned twice. One by the structure of the backpack, and once by it's own traveling bag. (This bag zips and is certainly water resistent.)
--When waiting for airport security I'd have the laptop and it's case out so the guys can do whatever they need to do to verify it's 'safe'. Otherwise you'll hold up the line while you unzip and unzip again. After you regain your shoes you can slide everything back into place.

CAMERA STOWAGE notes:::
--This bag is HUGE! I believe most folks will be able to tote their many lenses, a tripod .AND. rain gear and a change of clothes. The whole, extremely well-padded interior is made structurally flexible with strong velcro. This means that you can carry up to 11 small lenses without having to jury-rig something, or quite a few telephoto's.
--You could store the tripod internally, or there's an external rig for it.
--Besides the big compartment, there is another shallower compartment perfect for cleaners, rags, film (if you do that), passport, cellphone etc. There is a pocket and some pen-type holder slots.

OVERALL STRUCTURE notes:::
--This is a BIG backpack with a big price, and I wouldn't suggest it for someone with a small camera.

I wanted a versatile camera packback with certain features like the tripod holder, and the side opening pocket to get to the camera easily. I browsed all of the major manufacturers websites and compared many different packbacks. I'm also a fan of Lowepro products, but having looked around locally and on the website, I could not find a versatile packback that I was looking for. While looking online, I came across Vanguard website and saw the Skyborne series in the different sizes. I read other reviews and looked at some posted videos on youtube to help me decide. I wasn't sure at first what size to get for the amount of camera gear that I was planning of carrying so I took a chance and went the the Skyborne 48. It is the perfect size for my gear with room to grow if I decide to get a larger full-frame camera. The overall build quality is excellent with plenty of padding around the bag and shoulder/waist straps. Nice large zippers for accessing the different compartments and a very nice, simple rain cover that goes on easy when needed. The main compartments are accessed from the shoulder strap side. I wasn't sure if I would like that, but I think it was a good idea for this design and the compartments are not hard to open. The bright orange interior is very nice for visibility inside to see your stuff and all of the dividers are adjustable for different configurations. The top inside compartment above the camera compartment is nice and open to put different items in, snacks, water bottle, etc. I particularly like the tripod holder pouch and adjustable clip for different lenth tripods. My smaller Benro Mefoto transfunctional tripod fits perfectly in the holder. The padded waist strap is removable if you decide that you don't want to use it. The padded notebook/tablet pouch is a very nice addition if needed for probably up to a 14" notebook. I don't plan on backpacking with one, but the versatility is there. Very well thought out design with excellent overall quality.

I've had this for about a week now and have finally been able to figure everything out and make it work well for me. I had trouble in the beginning getting the velcro dividers to sit properly, but now have it down to a science. I even to some dividers out of my canon bag to create even more compartments in the lower portion of the backpack….
The rain cover feels too bulking in the back pad, so I removed that and just placed it in my luggage… The tripod holder on the back is not as sturdy as I would have thought, but it gets the job done.
There is a lot of room for all of my camera gear plus accessories and much more.
currently I have my camera body with lens attached, 2 extra lenses, a flash, microphone, 4 batteries, 4 sd cards, portable speaker, chargers for computer, camera batteries and iPhone/ipad, a portable hard drive, laptop, and iPad, and that is all just in the front and bottom compartment. There is still an entire compartment left to fill!
I wish the zippers were metal instead of cloth so that I could put a lock on them when no in use. I will be traveling overseas, and the side compartment seems to be vulnerable to pickpockets, although it is nice to have the primary storage on back of the pack rather than the front….
I will try and update my experience down the road when I actuarially arrive to my destination.
