No 'pin hole' views with the Vanguard Spirit binoculars.

They are waterproof, with a black rubber textured design, so they are easy to hold on to even with wet or sweaty hands.

Overall I'm very happy with the quality of both the optical and physical qualities.

Vanguard has outdone themselves with this phenomenal set of binoculars. Already a trusted brand in hunting optics, they are well on their way to making some of the best binoculars I have ever used. We have friends who own a small sporting goods store, so we brought these in to compare them to the other brands and types of binoculars they had in stock, and the clarity and design of these Vanguards outdid the others is every way.

To start, they're designed for using outdoors, there's no doubt about that. They are waterproof, with a black rubber textured design, so they are easy to hold on to even with wet or sweaty hands. The finish on the rubber is a black matte, so you won't be giving away your position (if you're hunting) with any glossy shine. The caps on both ends are very easily removed and are made of a soft rubber, that's not so tight it's a struggle to use, but not so loose you'll lose them somewhere. The eye-cups adjust by twisting them and to focus, and there is a nice large wheel in the center which can be reached and adjusted by those with even small hands (like myself).

The clarity is stunning, to the point of almost being shocking. I have one of those faces that shaped in a way that almost always causes black-out spots when trying to view through binoculars. I am able to adjust these to a perfect setting for my face, so that I can see through them without any dark areas. When viewing objects, they almost seem 3 dimensional against their background. You can focus on a leaf and it appears to pop out from against the tree. While I was showing these to our friends at their store, I was able to look out a window, across the road, and see the exact brand of chips and soda someone was purchasing at the check out counter in a gas station several shops away.

No 'pin hole' views with the Vanguard Spirit binoculars.

When you hold these up to your eyes, it's like you've switched from a table top TV (other binoculars) to a large format HD widescreen (Vanguard).

The large lens size opens up a whole new field of vision, with clarity and a broad range.

Took them to the Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Tour concert and felt like I was on stage with Brian, Mike, and Al!

Well constructed and waterproof - they will be excellent for any field trip you take.

For birdwatching, they would be exceptional.

I have three sets of binoculars. Nikon Action 12 X 50 5.5, Bushnell Off Trail 8 X 30, and now this Vanguard Spirit XF 10 X 42.

The numbers.

The first number (10) refers to the magnification, or, how many times closer an object will appear when looking through the binocular compared to looking at the same object with the naked eye. The second number (42) indicates the diameter of the objective lens (the light-gathering lens) in millimeters.

The aperture.

The bigger the lens, the heavier the binocular. While a large lens may provide a brighter image, the compromise is increased size and weight. On the other hand, a compact binocular fits in your pocket quite nicely, but because of its small objective lens size, it will not be as bright, especially in low light conditions such as dawn, dusk, or in the woods.

So, the Vanguard Spirit has a ten power magnification and a 42 mm objective lens. Field of View of 332 feet. Near focus of 6.9 feet and view angle of 6.35 degrees

The Vanguard Spirit falls right between the others in magnification

And again, right in between the other two in the light-gathering lens.

And their weights: 1 lb 3 oz, 1 lb. 10 oz, 2 lb; again the Vanguard Spirit in the middle. But the Vanguard Spirits size makes it easy to carry. (The Nikon is a monster for home use)

The Vanguard Spirit falls right between the other two binoculars in size (Nikon Action is biggest)

The Vanguard Spirit XF does a great job, it is fairly light, and the strap makes it easy to carry.

The bigger lens caps stay connected to the binoculars which I love.

It is a really terrific set of binoculars and a real bonus is that it is waterproof and fog proof so it makes a great hiking pair of binoculars.

These binoculars are just what the description says. They are lightweight and small and have darn good optics. In the past, I've always used cheaper-end binoculars from Bushnell and was fairly satisfied... at least until I used these. As for optics, they remind of the mid-range scopes I put on my rifles. In low-light they showed great light-gathering abilities. The clarity was awesome at all ranges, glare and reflections were nonexistant, and focussing was easy. One benefit of the Spirit XF over my previous Bushnell's is that the focusing on the Vanguard is entirely internal (except for the focus knob, of course). My old binoculars had the eyepiece lenses attached to a frame and mounted outside the main body and adjusted by an external screw attached to the focus knob. The problem with that design is that focus on one eye can differ from the other as the two are moved in and out from the body or if the glasses are pressed unequally against the face. Plus, an external mechanism is susceptible to focus changes from any pressure. These glasses do not have that problem since the eyepiece is connected to the body and focussing is done internally. Once the focus is set, it does not change until the focus dial is moved.

I highly recommend these to anyone looking for high-quality, midrange binoculars. And did I mention, they are waterproof and fog proof, too???

I marked them down one star because they are made in China, which has a reputation of poor internal quality.
