Book Description

May 29, 2010
In the early days of space exploration there was no Empire or Great Society, there were only people, lots and lots of people who were just trying to eke out a living, and many who wanted to see what was out there in space.

Some went out in small groups, but most went out in colony ships. At first they were isolated by the distance between various outposts and colonies. Some colonies survived, though many did not, those that survived grew thrived, those that didn’t often died in a brutal manner, rarely was there a rescue. It was not due to anyone’s lack of caring, rather it was that by the time anyone found out about the danger the colony was in, it was already too late. By the time a rescue party got there, there was no one to rescue.

In medieval times, surfs and town’s folk had their castles for protection. In the old West in North America's USA, the pioneers had military forts. As pioneers moved out into space the same was true for them as it had been for other pioneers of the past. And as in the past the task of protecting people, their settlements, and their worlds, fell to the military.

Even though that military was inadequately trained, and did not have the funding for this enormous task, the people who were going out into space wanted protection or they would not go. Politicians also wanted this protection for them, so that the people would want to go into space due to the overcrowding on earth. An so it was that even though most of this protection was nothing more than smoke and mirrors, the space outposts became safety zones to the various space faring Pioneers.

It wasn't enough. As in the past evil men preyed on the weak and defenseless. That is about to change.

Overall, a good story, with a significant amount of the book spent gathering the cast of characters together. The piece that drives me away, however, has nothing to do with the story, but with the stunning number of errors in the text. "Lintel" in place of "intel" is one glaring example of what must be a spellcheck search and replace, but finding similar errors and incorrect word usage throughout the book detracts from what would otherwise be a worthy story.

This author's first full length novel is Vanguard, a Science Fiction novel set in the near future.

His characters come across as real people, and as the heros that they are. The story line is excellent. It's a very readable book and hard to put down until you've read from cover to cover.

I am looking forward to move novels and short stories from this author!
