Gr. 4^-6. In the second book of the Time Navigators series, Danny and Dixie Fortune once again climb aboard their eccentric uncle's time machine to travel back in history to find their father, who is trapped somewhere in the past. As in the first book, the story's all-too-familiar premise and the stock characters would cause this series to flop were it not for a plot that moves briskly and contains convincing details about the historical setting, this time the French and Indian War. The problems the British had fighting a European-style war in the American wilderness are agonizingly portrayed, though Morris' research is not always fully integrated into the story. Although Danny's evangelism seems somewhat contrived--an ingredient that may appeal more to parents than to children--Morris' fast-paced youth fiction should prove as popular as his novels for adults.
