Book Description

Wick Poetry Chapbook Series May 31, 1996
This volume provides a collection of the work of American poet, Joe Bonomo.

Something spiritual, as well as actual, is broken in the world Joe Bonomo offers us, in this his first sustained collection. His response to what he is left with is to remake what he can in figures of comprehension and compassion. The size of his world is local and familiar, but that hardly prevents him from reaching into the silence or achieving, in finely-tuned language, his epiphanies. This is honest and lovely writing. 4.0 out of 5 stars Just another excellent Wick chapbook., August 19, 2008
This review is from: Vanishings from That Neighborhood (Wick Poetry Chapbook Series) (Paperback)
Joe Bonomo, Vanishings from That Neighborhood (Kent State University, 1996)

Another fine chapbook from Kent State's continually-surprising-with-its-quality Wick chapbook series. Bonomo's poems are relatively short, powerful without being overpowering, so rooted in the image they feed on rhythm and grow in units of light.

"Her voice if I tiptoed
in answering mine

as a warmth at the back
of the throat, as anything understood.

We would watch in television
clips of the grand days

in black & white, contrast
edged like a razor...."
("Invitation for Voices")

Fantastic stuff. But then, I only remember coming across a single Wick book I wasn't thrilled with; this one is just living up to the standard. ****
