5.0 out of 5 stars The Vantagepoints gift: Joyously helping us learn from our own lives, December 4, 2005
By
Rosa Say (Waikoloa, Hawai'i) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vantagepoints On Learning And Life (Paperback)
As a coach I have found there is no better way for those in my care to learn with complete joy and remember a lesson most easily than in the telling of a story, and Author Kevin Eikenberry is an engaging, wonderful storyteller. Read Vantagepoints on Learning and Life, and not only will you have new stories to inspire you, to learn from, and to teach with, you will be inspired to live your own life's stories with sharpened focus and energy.

After I had read this book, I sat at my desk, and I wrote scores of notes, gleaned from my memory of those times I felt I had learned something from my parents, my siblings, my husband, past mentors, and most of all, my children. I wanted nothing more in those moments of passionate writing, than to capture for eternity the lessons of my own life, to celebrate what I knew, and to have the raw emotion of the learning stories I could also tell of.

In revealing glimpses of his life, Kevin Eikenberry has given us something extraordinary: The opportunity to feel the victorious learning of our own lives once again in their full, very human glory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple And Profound Wisdom, April 20, 2006
By
This review is from: Vantagepoints On Learning And Life (Paperback)
Kevin Eikenberry's book, "Vantagepoints on Learning And Life," is truly an excellent book. Simply put, the book, which is written about principles that are down to earth, is written from the heart; coupled with a profound wisdom that is easy to comprehend and easy to implement.

From the first life story to the last, I enjoyed reading "Vantagepoints on Learning And Life" immensely. The stories were enjoyable to read and each one had a lesson to be learnt. I learned a lot about myself while I read the book and took those same principals and was able to better interact with everyone around me.

Simply put, Kevin Eikenberry's book is a delight and one which everyone should read. Let it's "simple" principals soak into your very being and become a part of your daily life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn to learn from your experience, January 12, 2006
By
Dick Richards (Phoenix, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vantagepoints On Learning And Life (Paperback)
I treated Kevin Eikenberry's book, Vantagepoints on Learning and Life, in much the same way as I would a book of meditations. It sat for a time on the patio table. I read many of its brief chapters while drinking morning coffee, and many during mid-afternoon breaks. Over Christmas holidays it was on a table in the den, available to me and to visitors. I found myself picking it up often. It is that kind of book, constructed of fifty-seven meditations that live up to its subtitle, Finding Learning Opportunities in Everyday Situations.

But "meditations" is not exactly the right term. They are engaging and well-told stories, along with reflections and lessons, drawn from Eikenberry's everyday experience. For example, after watching the movie, Field of Dreams, he muses about The Voice that speaks to him when he listens for it, and about what happens when he doesn't. After helping his father tear down a stubborn wall, he reflects on the process of overcoming obstacles. Considering his hobby-collecting tractors-he tells of the many benefits of pursuing a personal passion. When a rainy weekend postpones the Indianapolis 500-a big deal in Eikenberry's Hoosier landscape-he reminds himself that we often get caught up in our own perspectives, becoming blind to options and opportunities.

Vantagepoints draws its appeal from two sources. First, the commonplace nature of the stories; we have all had similar experiences (except for the tractor collection, which is decidedly foreign to someone like me who grew up on the streets of Philadelphia). And second, Eikenberry's skill at drawing lessons from his experience. His lessons are basic and profound at the same time.

Vantagepoints is clear and direct; an easy read. It will probably heighten your receptiveness to the potential for lessons in your current experience, and remind you of past experiences that contained important lessons. It had those two effects on me. Most important of all, it will remind you of a truth that, if you are anything like me, slips away all too easily: opportunities for learning are with us always.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vantagepoints Helps You to See Your Own Life in a New and Vibrant Way, January 4, 2006
This review is from: Vantagepoints On Learning And Life (Paperback)
'Vantagepoints on Learning and Life' is a delightful, inspiring book. Kevin Eikenberry writes with a mix of folksy wisdom and humor that reveals the significance and learning opportunity in the things that usually escape our attention, and helps us to see the ordinary in a new and vibrant way. Each `Vantage Point' is short - perfect as a small pick me up in the middle of the workday crunch, or to savor in your free hours as you reflect on your day. Entertaining and enlightening, 'Vantagepoints' is a wonderful book for everyone who wants to better appreciate life and rediscover the beauty and joy in everyday situations.

I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vantagepoints on Learning and Life, by Kevin Eikenberry, December 15, 2005
This review is from: Vantagepoints On Learning And Life (Paperback)
As I flipped through Kevin Eikenberry's "Vantagepoints on Learning and Life' and read his first article on Commitment, I could sense right away his own commitment and sincerity in sharing his personal life and experiences with others... and I am thankful that I have his book in my hand.

This is a book that I will definitely share with my loved ones and friends, and I will encourage my patients (I am a medical doctor) to read as well. Kevin's book touches the essential truths in life -- truths that are found in our daily living. To be able to extract the lessons from simple daily activities requires a keen sense of observation and the ability to contemplate the little things in life and their meanings. It is not something anyone can do.

I can sense a certain gentleness and compassion in hi approach towards life that is reflected in his writings - a sense of contentment and peace with life. There is certainly a lot we can all learn from this book.

I highly recommend it.

Kevin is a way shower; a director of sorts. His reflections and insights merit well-deserved praise! Each facet, or chapter, offers the reader a key to ignite their own personal journey. I share this book, as a fine gift, with other travelers (family members, friends - even strangers) who need to see the world afresh...what a guide!
