I have purchased many Vantec enclosures, and have been mostly a very satisfied customer. All the USB 2.0 cases I purchased were great values. But in July of 2011, I purchased the first generation of the USB 3.0 case from Vantec. That was a disappointment. The first generation case had a loose solder to the USB 3.0 controller, and never worked more than intermittently. This latest case though is up to the Vantec standards, and I'm quite happy with it. It is solid, dissipates heat nicely, looks good, and is very reasonably priced.

Nice aluminum case, drive mounts inside securely. Somehow they feel a little bigger than others I've used, but definitely elegant.

Use tip - if your drive needs that much current, plug in the 2 usb power connectors first, then plug the drive in.

Anything else might not get the drive booted properly, or might shut down your usb ports...

Lower power drives - you can ignore the second usb plug.

I have 2 of these for my 2.5" notebook hard drives and they work great. The case has a nice smooth feel to it and helps keep the hard drive cool. The edges are rounded so you won't get cut by the corners. Best of all the performance of USB 3.0 is quite good. I can get up to 80MBps write on these drives which helps a lot when transferring large BluRay MKV videos. It also comes with a USB cable so that you can power the drive without a separate A/C adapter which is very convenient. Highly recommended.

The product was delivered within the time limit I was given. I ordered 2 of these and both work with out any issues. Plug and play. I would buy again and would recommend.

Used this for the 640 GB hdd that came out of a laptop. I want to have a convenient external backup drive for the same laptop. This item is attractive, small and well constructed. Was fairly easy to assemble, but I was confused about the rails. The tray fits below the rails not inside them. I'm backing up the computer now. I'm using both usb connections on the interface since the hdd is a mechanical not a ssd one. This laptop (Asus G73Sw) has a 3.0 USB port, which is why I bought this enclosure. I've been using this for backups for the last couple of months now, and it's insanely fast! It is definitely working in USB 3.0 mode. I highly recommend this enclosure!

Great product, with no issues my crucial SSD went right in with no installation problems. My computer recognized the drive right away, case stays nice and cool, just another great product from VanTec.

I bought this item from a store, but since the Product ID's match I don't see how it could be different.

This is my first fore into USB 3.0 and I have to say I'm a little upset. Although my motherboard has USB 3.0 ports and Windows 7 x64 sp1 supports said USB 3.0 it doesn't. So after a few days of trying everything I almost had a break through. I got the USB 3.0 working for about 12 minutes. Then the drivers crashed. I'm guessing USB 3.0 is probably best left to add-in cards for now.

While the USB 3.0 was working I only got 28MB/s out of it. USB 2.0 maxes at 16-18MB/s. When this drive (NOT THE ENCLOSURE) was hooked to eSata it ran at 55MB/s so I know it isn't the drive. I'll chuck it up to the USB 3.0 ports on the motherboard. My mother board is a MSI 870A-G54. Just a warning to those who own it, the NEC drivers don't work correctly in either Windows 7 x64 sp1, or Windows XP x64 sp2.

With that said, the USB 2.0 worked fine. Something that the description and box doesn't mention is the need for two USB ports on the system. One port is for data, the other is for power. At least that's what I presume. I've managed to get USB 2.0 running without the second USB plug, but the drive makes an underpowered sound after a few seconds. This is a let down since other USB 2.0 enclosures only need one cable. Technically a USB 3.0 device shouldn't need two plugs either since more power comes from the port by standard. The instructions make no note about this. It's left up to experimentation.

The case is hard aluminum and feels firm. One point regarding the USB cable. It uses a full size USB plug, so even when running the drive in USB 2.0 mode, the user will need a USB 3.0 cable.

I give this device a 4 out of five stars.
