So here is the basic idea I had with this optical drive case. You remove the optical drive from your desktop case put it into this case. Then you can put your computer in a closet. The only things you need outside the closet are your mouse, keyboard, monitor, and optical drive. So now you have a completely uncluttered desk with your computer tucked away where no one need see.

I have not gotten far enough to put the computer away. However I have installed my optical drive into the case. One thing I liked about this case is the esata which I am putting into use. Why have slow usb/firewire when you can have fast sata.

Physical installation was the hardest. There is not a lot of room at the back of the compartment for wires. So they end up crammed in the back and twisted out of shape. Beyond that physical installation is great. The drive slides right in. There are standard holes in the side of the case that screw into the side of the drive. The cover slides on from the front and gets screwed in by two screws in the back. The whole thing feels solid, heavy, no skimping on the thickness of the parts.

I used this drive as my installation and boot source for windows 7. So I plugged it into the computer, turned it on, tossed in the installation disc and turned on the computer. Guess what happened? Everything that would normally happen for an internal optical drive. It booted into the windows 7 installer. Installed windows without a peep and rebooted the computer.

I'm shocked at the quality of this enclosure. Very well built, runs quiet and keeps drive cool. Instantly recognized in windows 7 x64. No need to install any drivers. Speed of drive is the same as when it was in the case via eSATA (Currently using an LG blueray drive). Havn't tested USB yet.

I like having the extra space in my case, and it is very useful to have an external/portable blueray drive. Very happy with this enclosure.

Comes with eSATA cable as well as internal bracket which surprised me. I'm using with HafX case that already has eSATA connector in front, but the bracket will be handy to add as a rear connector.

SATA wire cable was soldered directly to the controller board and connected wire was broken at once when I tried to connect a HD. I returned it for refund. Do not buy this enclosure.

Excellent! Really like the cooling fan addition. I've lost a lot of drives due to overheating. Don't expect this to be one of those.

Life is better with access to optical disks from any computer system. USB and ESATA connections allow the optimal speed for such applications....

I got this to use between 3 different computers. I put my dvd burner in it no problem and it works great! now I don't have to buy a new burner for all my backup and burning needs on my 3 machines. It's a really good buy. The shipping was fast and I am 100% pleased.

Because I have an older laptop that has only USB 2.0 and eSATA, eSATA was my only real high speed option. Indeed that is how it worked out. No sort of bujffer issues with this 16x writer, unlike even my 8x internal drive.
I don't know how this compares to using USB 3.0. A USB 3.0 case would be more economical, but I can't say how it would compare to this. Likewise, I do not know why this case has USB 2.0 as an option. Why would anyone spend the extra money this case costs vs a USB 2.0 case and then use it as a USB 2.0 device? USB 2.0 case is more economical than even the USB 3.0. BUT, when you have eSATA port and only USB 2.0 as an alternative, this is THE solution to getting high speed external device. At least that is my experience.
