All the other 1-star review experiences match mine, except that my problems began in earnest when trying to clone, which is the primary reason I bought this enclosure.

COMPARISON REVIEW for Acomdata Samba USB 2.0 3.5-Inch IDE/SATA Hard Drive Enclosure SMBXXXU2E-BLU (Blue) and Vantec NexStar CX NST-300S2-BK 3.5-Inch SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure (Black)

I recently swapped out two 750 GB Seagate SATA drives from my HP Mediasmart Servers and replaced them with 2 TB WD Green drives (WD20EADS). I wanted to convert those two Seagate drives into external drives for backup purposes using USB drive enclosures. I had bought several enclosures a while ago, so I had to do the research to figure out which were better these days. My criteria were (1) not expensive (drives are so cheap today that an expensive enclosure sort of defeats the purpose of re-using old drives if you want to be cost-effective since you can just buy a new external drive for not much more than the fancier enclosures); (2) easy to assemble without the stress of thinking you are breaking something or somehow degrading the performance of the drive; (3) it just works (the occasionally elusive ease of the "plug and play" ideal). Also, a personal preference, I wanted a physical on/off switch and not a "touch-sensitive" electronic switch (like that found on the Macally G-S350SU Hi-Speed eSata/USB2.0 External Storage Enclosure for 3.5inch SATA HDD) or no switch. Finally, I also wanted good heat dissipation and vibration control.

This is a great performing enclosure! I've had it now for 7 months and it has been working flawlessly! In the video I show you how I put mines together and it working connected to my computer.

I highly recommend this enclosure!

Having briefly skimmed over the reviews before ordering, I ordered this device as my desktop crashed and I need to recover my files from the two hard drives that were in it, also I need them for storage as my laptop is running on a small ssd drive. I became quite worried when after I had already ordered this I start seeing numerous people with windows 7 stating this does not work, and that it does not work with western digital drives. Well I am using both, windows 7 64-bit and a western digital caviar black 1tb drive. Within 5 minutes of getting home to my package it was installed and working, all of my files were there and there was no need to install drivers, windows 7 took care of it and the drivers worked. To anyone worried because of these reasons, don't fret. I think the reasons so many people are having problems is either using a drive larger than this will support, or possibly not connecting the cable inside the case that connects to the caddy, or a combination of these things coupled with the fact some surely will ship DOA as any electronic device. My point, if you use win 7 or have a WD hard drive, so do I, and this worked instantly out of the box once the hard drive was inserted and I connected it to my pc. I hope this helps any of you on the fence about this device that are thinking of spending more on a device that will not do anything this one doesn't. If you just need to recover files or utilize a hard drive for extra storage like me, and you do not need it to have e-sata or usb 3.0, this thing is awesome and I'm actually very surprised at how fast it is considering the usb 2.0 interface.

I was originally leaning towards a Nexstar 3 enclosure but decided I was far too cheap to cop the extra couple of bucks. I ordered this case, received it reasonably quick for free shipping, and had no issues with it. It got luke warm in the process of copying over 12 gigs of information. Runs flawlessly with a Maxtor Diamondmax 7200rpm 200GB hard drive. Solid aluminum case with a tight fit. The only 3 possible flaws are:
1) Lack of clear instructions (I thought it was true plug and play such as a flash drive...but I had to use my Maxtor CD to set it up)
2) LED Cable is a small pain the butt. A non-issue once you put it in if you plan to keep one drive in all the time like I do.
3) Screws to assemble the case seem to be self-tapping? This is an issue for some. Just screw it in straight the 1st time and it's a non-issue as well.

Overall: Great design (smaller than some 3.5" enclosures) and performance...especially for the money.

So I needed this hard drive case in a pinch because the fan on my computer blew and I needed to access something on my hard drive. I get 1 day shipping, it arrives and I try to plug it into another computer. The USB drivers were not recognized. I tried it on 3 different computers. 2 running WIN 7 and one running Windows Server 2008 R2. Couldn't get it to work. After time spent troubleshooting, trying to reinstall drivers, restarting the computer, googling the error... I go to vantec's website. This driver is only approved for us with OS up to VISTA! Of course no where on this Amazon listing does it say that. If it had I wouldn't have purchased it. Besides, how old is the case that it isn't WIN7 approved which came out like 2+ years ago....
